As a Chef that works in a major player on the strip,I can say this at least.
I am privi to alot of information and I can also tell you that the web employment centers post on the net jobs supposedly available. Do not be fooled, some of these listings can be as long as 2-3 weeks old.
I KNOW where I am at, for culinary, we are NOT hiring and have NOT been hiring for quite some time.
We hire internal first and if nothing comes up [which usually it does ] then we outsource. By law, every HR has to post the slots available.
I can also attest to other outlets [ again, strictly culinary ] as I speak regularly to other chefs. And for sure, 4 other major players on the strip are NOT hiring and haven't been.
It is not that I want to sound negative here, but really..the truth cannot be denied. Yes, it is pitiful everywhere. However, for a town that ultimately depends on gaming revenue...the floor under Vegas is bottoming out, hard!
I was approached by a person who just came to Vegas last month. This kid had no idea of what it even took to be employed here. He came on a whim and expected to be employed within a 2-3 week period. I totaly felt sorry for this guy, but in awe, i laughed a little inside.
Even in a "good" economy in this town, people think they can just waltz right in and everything will be fine. No...No people, it isnt. Besides needing the cards as the original poster was inquiring about, you first need to apply for a position on the strip,then..you have to wait to even be considered. Then, if you are considered and asked to a interview, it could still take another post interview and then you go through background. It could literally take you 2 months to be processed and in. And..again, that is in a GOOD economy.
The research should be left up to the individual...however, to anyone moving out here on a whim, I offer this suggestion.
Know your limitations, know what you are getting into and for the love of eva mendez...make sure you are secure in every facet of your move. You will thank yourself later.

Rushx1........You are 100% right.

People, before you move to Vegas, test it OUT!!!!
There are quite a few individuals on this board that would love to see other people crash and burn. Misery attracks misery.

Regarding jobs, just look at out unemployment rate. 11.5% (the highest in Nevada's history) and climbing says it all.

Thank you!

I was just thinking about my past experiences and unfortunately this poster is right. I originally moved to Vegas in December of 2004. I only came with $1,600 and I knew no one here. It was very hard to find work, even back then. I did manage to get a in home nursing assistant job, but I could not get enough hours to get by. Needless to say, I wound up homeless living in the backseat of my car. I realized I was going to wind up on the streets with nothing so I drove back to Phoenix. I immediately got 2 jobs there and was doing quite well. I still hated living in Phoenix and I wanted to come back here. I managed to put away $12,000 over the next year while living in Phoenix. I decided to give it another shot as I had a decent amount of savings this time. I came here in again in March of 2006. As soon as I got here, I went out looking for work. Well, it took me until December of 2006 to finally get one. Even then, for the first 4 months or so I only was getting 8 hours a week! I was only making $120 every two weeks, it really sucked, but it was better than nothing. I lived as cheap as I could off my savings, but I finally ran out of money by March of 2007. I was about to finally give up and go back to Phoenix for the last time, but luckily my company got an opening at another site which was 40 hours a week. So, in other words, it basically took me a whole year to find a full time job. Remember, this is also before the economy got bad. I have been trying recently to find a second job, but I given up as there is nothing available anymore.

I believe that if someone wants to come to vegas and expects to get a job on the strip or something fancy... its not going to happen in a week.. my emphasis is that you take whatever you can get (walmart, taxi, food, whatever) and then keep applying.. you may make only 10 bucks an hour in the beginning but its better than nothing..

More like $7.25 an hour in the beginning. I have worked for the same company now for over 2 and a half years, and I make under $10 an hour. In fact, I would be thrilled to make $10 an hour.

I agree. There are jobs available. I have seen the employment ads. It might not be what you want and you might have to convince a potential employer that you can give 100% to a job for which you might be overqualified. I recently hired a young person for an entry level job over a more experienced person who would be making less than his/her previous employment. I am kicking myself now because this 20 year old is not working out because he/she has no work ethic. I am going to fire this employee and start over again. I will be wiser next time.
