The models for these opened this weekend. If anyone here saw them can you let me know your feedback/opinion on the layout and the location within the community.

Las Vegas, NV - New Homes - Mountain's Edge - Silver Hills a KB Home Community (http://www.kbhome.com/Community~CommID~00850796.aspx - broken link)

I don't live in the area so can't drop by myself.

And yes I know Mountains Edge is foreclosure ridden

KB Homes don't have the best quality reputation.

KB certainly has had some quality issues that have received a lot of press. But so have all of the other budget builders. In this price range, most homes are built almost identically.

However, I have noticed that most other builders have stopped building in the valley whereas KB continues to do so because they have re-worked all of their floorpans to be as least costly as possible to construct. Most of KB's floorpans right now are 4 walls with a big "great room" inside. Bathrooms are stacked on one side of the home to limit plumbing, floorpans have very little variation, and the "standard" features are apartment quality and the design centers have scaled way back.

But heck, you get what you pay for. I'm sure that you could get a very nice new home for base price +15%-20% in upgrades.

That particular development is on the western edge of Mountain's Edge. The area is mostly built out.

I don't have any particular problems with KB though I agree at the moment they are squeezing every last dollar out of the houses.

There is a large public facility site a block or so the the east. I would suspect in is a school and a park though I can no longer find the master plan map for ME. To the west is open desert zoned for another master planned project. I would however think that open desert will still be there in 5 years and maybe even 10.

Economically it is a bad decision to buy new at this point as the REOs offer more value than the builders by a large margin. Than again if you have to have a new one nothing wrong with that project.

Thanks all for the responses even though Olecapt was really the only one that answered my questions

It sounds like the location inside ME is a good one because of the seclusion, although it's probably farthest from Blue Diamond.

Personally I prefer this great room type of layout by leaps and bounds over the divided room layout. Understand it costs less but to me is worth more - to each his own I guess...

Also, inquire about "association fees" within both areas. I understand they can be quite steep.

I have seen them and fell in love with the larger one story house. Interior had a very nice floor plan. I was impressed.

I happen to live in this development. It's a nice area, but the hoa/lid/sid are a bit steep. Also dont bother buying the new ones unless its exactly what you want. There are quite a few empty homes for sale here.
