Ok, So my girlfriend, our son and I are planning on moving from Ewa Hawaii to Las Vegas Nevada. We dont know exactly what to expect, but, would like to get some information before we get thrown into the pit. We are both 22, and are in a longterm lesbian relationship. We live in Hawaii where single family homes (even in the crap areas) start at $599,000. And thats for a 1,600 sqft property. So pretty much a shack for a ton of money. Economy is bad here and money is hard to come by (I know the whole US is suffering, however, the cost of living here is ridiculous.) Cigarettes are approx. $7-$8/pack, $3.35/gallon of gas, $5.00/ normal size shampoo, and $8.00/gallon of milk. I mean just by seeing those rates, I wanna jump off a building. Anyways... We are hard working people and make around $50,000/year together. Rent is $1,600 for our 2 bedroom upstairs unit apartment. Water is roughly $100 per month, and well you see the picture. I want to move to Las Vegas because for one, people from Hawaii seem to be attracted to Vegas (its apparently the ninth island). Theres Hawaiian products, food, and lots of people from Hawaii. Have a few distant relatives there and they seem to love there lives, and have nice thiings I cant afford here in hawaii. I want to know, How much does it cost for rent, groceries, water, electric, car, insurance, ettc. ? What is a good nest egg to bring or prepare? How much and where can I receive all of the ID cars needed? Where can I buy a nice affordable car? Whats the best city to live in? Best schools? Worst neighborhoods? Do people from Hawaii tend to be liked by people in Vegas? Will I be able to make good money?????? I am a sales professional, my girlfriends in Culinary. Any info is good in. Please just help us decide. Hawaii is beautiful, the beaches are lush, but, really? Driving 3 hours and youve covered the whole isle gets boring after 22 years. I want to explore.

This is just too many questions to answer. I can tell you the cost of living is WAY lower in Vegas than the prices you quoted in Hawaii. It is recommended to bring 6 months of living expenses. Jobs are hard to come by now as unemployment is 12.3%.

The good thing is the cost of living is cheap. Many foreclosures so rental or purchases can be had cheap. The bad thing is the job situation is bleak. Sales jobs may be tough to come by, or commission based, which means you may not make minimum wage if people don't buy. The good school areas/neighborhoods are Summerlin, then Henderson. But for two young people, it really depends on your lifestyle, and what you want to do. You will be amazed at what the nice looking houses you can rent, but remember to check out the neighbors. Investors are buying up foreclosures and renting to anyone who will pay rent. Good luck.

Don't move unless you have a job, as the earlier blogger said unemployment is at 12.3% there are allot of nice area's to live.
People are welcome no matter where they come from there are folks from all over the world here, almost like New York.

Rent is at a all time low in and around Las Vegas, taxes are figured on 1.9% of the purchase price, air conditioning is expensive a 1700sq/ft house can run $400.00 a month and up depending on where you like to keep the thermostat. Water is ridiculously low considering we are having a major water shortage.

There are great deals all over for cars, there is lots to do here. It is called sin city we have a terrible school system here so if you think your going to have your kids attend a great school here it isn't going to happen.

CityCenter has 12,000 job openings and 145, 000 folks applied,Hard Rock is hiring I think about 800 and Hard Rock Cafe that is opening on the strip is hiring abut 500. You do the math not enough jobs so make sure you have a job when you come. there is 13,000 home less folks in Las Vegas and you don't want to be one of them.

We are #1 in foreclosures in the Us and it's not slowing up so if you come without jobs have a years wages, I know allot of qualified folks that haven't found work for over a year and they have sent out 1000's of resumes and I am not exaggerating. It's a great place to live and work but not be unemployed. Good luck

i remember reading the 145k figure was applications in the first week... i applied for a department store mgr position (6 stores - 20 positions, 2000 applicants).. went through 2 dept interviews before being shot down.

#1 in foreclosures, not anymore, we are #2 still bad.. florida is #1.. however vegas sold more houses last month than since 10yrs ago.. prices are way down of course...
the jobs IMO can be found however they may not be what you want.. if you have the dedication and don't care what you do, you can find work..

Default Weigh your Options Carefully

The cost of living in Las Vegas is going to be a lot lower.

A 2 bedroom apartment starts at $900 and goes up from there. Cigarettes are $5 a pack & milk $3 a gallon, you can get some suave shampoo (if you don't have picky tastes) for $1. My water bill (for a 3 bedroom house) is $20 a month.

Yes there are lots of Hawaiians here, and Hawaiian food but there are NO beaches. The Lake Mead "beach" area does not actually count as a beach and it is generally crowded, dirty, and polluted. You can always drive to the west coast beaches though.

The price of a car will really be based on the type of car & whether you purchase it new or used. Right now the automobile industry is not doing too great so you will likely get a good deal. Your payment will depend on your credit history and the purchase price of the car. Being landlocked has it's advantages- for instance, the basics a person needs are more easy to obtain and therefore cheaper than having these items shipped to an island (this includes cars). If you cannot afford a card you can take the bus. Public transit sucks here but if you no other choice what can you really do?

The real problem, like most people are going to tell you, is gaining employment once you arrive. Sales is rather vague so I cannot tell you how employable you are. If you sell cars you will probably need to sell something different but I did see that CARMAX was hiring last week so maybe car dealerships are hiring because old salesmen quit due to the fact that they weren't selling cars or making money.

The types of cards you could potentially need are as follows:
If you plan to work in a place where you sell or distribute alcohol you will need a TAM card. Most people refer to it as a TAM card but in actuality any company that provides you with alcohol training certification will do. The most affordable TAM/Alcohol training card is available through http://www.aatnv.com. You can take the test online, print the results out & return them to their Alcohol Awareness Training office and they will print your TAM/alcohol training card for $15. This is much cheaper than the actual TAM offices.

Another card you might need is a health card from the health department. It is required for people who plan to work around children or food. You must specify which one when you apply for the card. The cost is $50. Visit http://www.southernnevadahealthdistr...alth_cards.htm for more information.

The only other type of card you might need would be a gaming card but it is extremely unlikely that you will actually need one. If you do the company that hires you (and requires you to have one) will tell you what you need to do to get one.

The likelihood of you getting a job & successfully transplanting here depends on the following factors:
- credit history (apartment complexes will check this & so will potential employers if you apply at any major casinos)

- criminal history (minor charges might be overlooked but an extensive criminal history reduces your odds of gaining employment in a failing economy)

- ability to pass a drug test (not all employers drug test but A LOT do - if you want to work anywhere on the strip that is owned by MGM/MIRAGE for instance be prepared to take a hair test... that means you have to have been drug free for the last 90 days)

- past work history (Vegas employers already don't like to hire the new person in town because a lot of people wind up leaving within a few months because the culture is so different - if your work history is unstable and you have changed jobs frequently you might not find someone willing to waste their money on processing a new employee who might not stick around)

I hope this helps.

Default Don't move here!!!!!!

The problem with a lot of people that want to move here is that they do not do their research. There are no jobs here that will support basic living expenses. I suggest if you are still determined to come up here; stay here for 2 weeks to see if you can land a job.

I am on the cut list at my job. Employment end in a couple of months. I have already accepted employment in the San Francisco area.

Either way, good luck and best wishes.
