Nope Prostitution is illegal in Clark County which is the site of Las Vegas.

There are legal brothels in Nevada. The closest to Las Vegas would be in Pahrump...roughly 60 miles from Vegas.

There are prostitutes all over Vegas. Of course it's not legal, but it may as well be because you can see it when you go to the strip. There are loads of booklets you can pick up that are filled with call girls. So while it's not technically "legal" it is done in abundance.

That is amazing. I was all over the strip today and downtown. Saw not a single identifiable hooker. Actually in my last few trips down there I have not seen anyone who I identified as a hooker.

Maybe you go to a different strip than the one most of us go to?

If prostitution is the standard by which people judge a town, I'd like them to know that I can go to any town of any size in America and find a prostitute within twenty minutes if I was so inclined. Of course, Carol won't let me so I don't.

Illlegal prostitution goes on in Las Vegas the same as anywhere. Many of our hookers are school teachers and secretaries from Southern California who come here on weekends to suppliment their incomes. The "escort" business is a big industry here, but it's hard to prove they are hookers so they get away with it.

The other hypocrisy that gets me, especially from easterners, is gambling. There also is gambling going on in every city in America, only Nevadans aren't hypocrites about it so we made it legal so it can be controlled and taxed. The NBA Commissioner is the biggest hypocrite of all because he knows that there is more illegal gambling going on in the New York area than there is legal gambling in Las Vegas, yet he thinks that legal gaming here will somehow corrupt professional basketball. What a joke. We're going to corrupt the most corrupt people in sports? After all, I don't remember any of the point shaving scandals having anything to do with Las Vegas.

But, the question by punjabibride may be valid, and enquiring minds need to know. There are only 17 counties in Nevada and most of them are larger than many Eastern states. Nevada is the 7th largest state in the country; larger than many Europian nations. The "cow counties" , the ones that don't have any cities, unless you count Pahrump, Elko, and Ely as cities, have practically no tax base. Even the large ranches don't own the land, they lease it from the Federal Government. There are counties larger than Vermont that have less than 3,000 people. Cowboys who may work a hundred miles from civilization have pretty slim pickins when it comes to wimmin. So the legal houses of prostitution provide both a service and a source of tax revenue for counties that otherwise would have none. Clark, Washoe, Carson City, and I think one other county (maybe Story), don't allow prostitution. Clark County pretty much supports the whole state anyway, and sadly, the other counties hate us for it like a kept woman hates her sugardaddy.

You must be losing your touch and just can't spot them. They are there... prostitutes on the strip aren't walking around looking $2.00 crack hoe's. Many look like upscale women to cater to the business crowd that come in for conventions. Others look like your average 22 year old college student. They come in all shapes, sizes, looks, etc. Some could look like your wife, your daughter, your mother, even your son. Others are strippers that for a few dollars more will do more than dance.

Different types appeal to different people and they are crawling all over the place. Don't assume there's a certain "look" to a hooker, there's not. Only the movies have a certain look, not real life.

Don't be so nieve people! Thinking and arguing that prostitution doesn't exist in Las Vegas shows just how out of touch with things you are.

Moderator cut: Message you were quoting/replying to has been deleted News flash: Even someone that has NEVER lived in that city knows there is prostitution taking place. It doesn't take a genious to figure that out. It exists in all major cities, so there's no way that sin city, the adult entertainment capital is not prone to it as well. Quite to the contrary. When hookers grow up they want to be hookers in Vegas! :-) It's like their mecca.

Take a look at this article (just read even the opening paragraph):
http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat...rs-rally_x.htm

Someone better call USA Today and inform them that there are no hookers in Las Vegas. LOL LOL You guys crack me up!

Or how about this news article where a prostition sting in one weekend resulted in 184 arrests, including a judge:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_ho...s/8184513.html

Someone better tell Metro to stop doing stings for things that aren't taking place to begin with. Better not call actually, Metro would laugh their heads off if they heard olecapt or the kid say that prostitution doesn't take place in Las Vegas because it's illegal.

Here's another article that estimates that there are between 3 - 10 thousand of them there:
http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/2006/07/27/awsi1.html (broken link)

Stop being so nieve people.... of course prostitution exists in Las Vegas. It's big business there. Maybe you don't pay attention and see it, maybe you don't know what prostitutes look like, but it's THERE! You should know by now that something being illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Ask Metro.... it happens a lot in sin city.

More nonsense. Of course there are prostitutes in Las Vegas. No one said otherwise. You find prositutes where you have tourists...we have lots of tourists...therefore...

They are not legal and not about to be legal. For some reason that is how we like it in Clark County. That was the question asked.

They are not commonly visible on the strip. If they are there they look like the other women on the strip. You do not stumble over prostitutes in your normal life. I spent yesterday near strip and downtown. In roughly 7 hours we saw a grand total of a couple of likely homeless.

The article cited dealt with a national sex workers convention. First guy quoted was from San Francisco. Yes we do allow just about anybody to hold a convention here. On ocassion even the Christian Right.

One may well have an opinion that Las Vegas is not a suitable place to live. But that does not provide a license to lie about the fact situation. Prostitution is both illegal and not a problem to the locals. That is the fact.

That is unture...as you agreed in your next message. Exactly how do you "see it" when you agree they look like everybody else?
SOME look like everyone else. Others stand out, like the strippers and those in the call girl books that are about town.

Moderator cut: off topic/personal

Some people CAN see and identify it (like me), others are blind to it Moderator cut: personal
It exists, whether legal or not. Moderator cut: personal

I thought this was a discussion forum, not an argument forum. There's no need to get nasty.
If I understand what olecapt is saying, he is saying it isn't so obvious to him and not a problem for locals. Keep in mind that we get over 40 million visitors a year in Las Vegas. We have nearly 4,000 conventions and trade shows a year. Prostitutes know that those people come here with money to burn and expect to let everything go as it were. 3,000 or so prostitutes in a resort town where that many people go to have a good time doesn't seem to me to be a lot considering. The point is, Las Vegas is only different than other cities in that entertainment is the reason people come here, and they come by the millions, so you could expect there to be thousands of prostitutes working that lucrative market. So no one should be surprised there is a lot of prostitution going on, even though it is illegal. I don't like to see women or men degrade themselves, but since it goes on everywhere, from New York City to the smallest town in the world, I think it should be legal and regulated. As far as I know, you don't find street walkers in Elko rolling Johns and giving them diseases. The red light district is one block off the main drag, right behind a couple of the main casinos, and the girls are examined regularly by doctors. They pay taxes and don't cause any trouble. Again, there are only two metropolitan areas in a state that is larger than many foreign countries, and most of the legal whorehouses are hundreds of miles away out in the desert. Maybe it should be legal in Las Vegas, Reno, and especially Carson City too, where the legislators would have to pay to scr** somebody besides us taxpayers. But it will never happen because it would give the hypocrites who come here to gamble and carouse something else to yell about when they go back home to Podunk.
