Hey guys! Allow me to introduce my self and give some background info.

I'm 18 years old, and I'm I'll be moving to Vegas, or out side of vegas in 4th quarter of 2009, I'm not moving with family, but with my fellow band-mates, as work out there in our industry is much more abundant. Before I do go out there though, I am trying to seek out a day job or places to work so I'm not a sitting duck while I'm out there. Do any of you guys have any suggestions or recommendations as to where work is available, and who is hiring people in my age group?

Any help would be greatly and truly appreciated

Brian

At your age? Repeat after me, "Would you like fries with that?" Feel lucky if you can get that. You also might bag groceries and push shopping carts, if you're lucky. Best of luck, in any case.

Unfortunately, the job market is terrible right now in Vegas. The college educated, and people with skills are now being forced to take low end jobs. So, where does that leave the rest of us? You guessed it. I wish you luck, but coming from out of state, unless you have a job already lined up, is not a good idea. At least until the economy recovers.

I think the OP was saying he is in the music biz and he and his bandmates would find work easy because it is very abundant in Las Vegas.

There are some top notch entertainers in Las Vegas. I don't think it will be so easy for a young band to find good paying "gigs". Having said that, I wish them all the best of luck and don't want to dash any dreams.

Finding a day job will probably not be easy. It can be done, but I hope you guys bring a LOT of cushion money before you move here.

Good luck!

The nice thing about the Internet is that you can assess postings from where you're at, but most of the work it sounds like you're after probably won't be eager to wait for you to relocate. People are also correct that relocating without something lined up can be devastating. Sort of a catch-22, that...

On a good side, Vegas does have a massive service sector, and there are always tourists to serve and employees who don't show up for work or slack too much. Setting your sites on white or blue collar work, though, is going to require you to really set yourself apart from the throngs of qualified pros who can't get back in the loop after downsizing. If you're anything like I was at 18, you've spent a lot more time with your band mates and that scene than actually pursuing training and credentials. All I can give is the good luck wishes that other posters gave, in that case. If so, enjoy the service sector... it does build character and a great network of potential fans. Socially, the best times I ever had were the after-parties among fellow service sector folk before and during college.

If your music has found approval from reputable venues where you're at, you should be able to find plenty of places to play and maybe even sufficient income to live in a seedier area. However, don't make the mistake of coming here because you think your current area is too "stuffy" on the music scene and Vegas will welcome musicians with open arms. That's a classic - yet pitiful - mistake. If you haven't found widespread approval where you're at (albeit from a more limited audience), you'll only face more competition, a more fickle audience, and get humiliated by owners/managers of venues who have plenty of acts to choose from here.

The same thing happened to some great artists I knew in Santa Fe. Sure, there's a bigger and better scene, but everyone knows it and otherwise exemplary folks can become very insignificant before they even know what happened.

What a great well thought out post, and totally correct. +1 for you.

Wouldn't the OP need to be 21 to work in a place that has gambling and serves booze?

It never hurts to try. I just hope that you bring enough money to live on while you look and audition as it may take a while. And I hope you have family wherever you're coming from that can help you get back home if it doesn't work out. When we came here in 1964 we said we can always go back home if we don't find a job here. It took a month, which is less than normal (6-8 weeks is normal), and I never went back. BTW, you can work in casinos and bars at 18, you just can't hang out there or drink. I might make it harder to get a job though, unless you're Wayne Newton, who I believe was 13 when he started working casino showrooms.
