Now that is strange . . . no squirrels. I've only lived here a few months (Sun City Aliante) but two people at the dog park here were saying we have tiny little squirrels running around. Could they be mistaken? chipmunks maybe?

I have seen numerous small black bats, quail, lizards, and one lonely jackrabbit.

They are sometimes called desert rats...which they ain't I believe the correct name is white tailed antelope squirrels. See...

White-tailed Antelope Squirrels (Ammospermophilus leucurus)

If you get out into even a little piece of open desert you will find them. My departed German Spitz used to raise one on ever third or fourth walk. They were done for (without intervention) if they did not make a hole in the first few seconds.

You often see them scuttling across the road in front of you or going up a concrete block wall. They live in the landscaping boulders in my front yard and heavily in the vacant lot across the street.

They are seeing chip monks (not the ones from church), and maybe ground squirrels. Not the same thing. No squirrels in southern Nevada. There are some in the Reno area, but that's over 400 miles north and at the base of the Sierras. There are squirrelly people though.

I have a whole herd of lizards in my front and back yards. Lots of bats, jack rabbits (which aren't rabbits, they are hares), bunny rabbits, quail, road runners, and "Pleading" doves, in this area. Now and then you might see a coyote if you're lucky. And if you're close to Red Rock you'll probably see a bobcat in the back yard at sometime, and more than likely, a burro. Again, if you're lucky you could see a big horny sheep...I mean a Desert Big Horn Sheep. Up on Mt. Charleston, mostly on the back side (get there from Pahrump) you will see deers and elks. There are a lot of owls around here too, and in arroyos and streets that look like arroyos you'll see Killdeer. Red Tail Hawks and ravens are abundant, and where there are ponds, such as Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Corn Creek Field Station, you'll see huge frogs and swimming turtles. Don't forget to watch for buzzworms too.

Our house was built right on their ancestral hunting grounds. For a couple of years we had a family in the back yard. Then they moved out front where the big flood of ought three ('03) wiped them out.
