i have a question is there a site where i can search for jobs. im not sure if i would be classified as a felon beause i havent gone to prison but i do have a criminal bakground including 2 petty theft charged and a forgery charge. they are recent the last case being in may of 09. i have been trying to look for work on other sites with minimal luck. i am 19 and just looking to turn my life around and get in to college. all three charges are open and i might have warrants for them because i couldnt pay them so i kinda just let it alone. is there any help for me?

if they are open, doesn't that mean you haven't been sentenced yet... imo, if a company does a background check which most do, you are a sitting duck if you have warrants...

Forgery, petty theft and ID theft sounds like you're well on your way to a career on wall street.

Well, good luck is all I can say. I have been looking for work for 4 months or so, and have found nothing. I also have a clean criminal record. With all those charges, I would say it is going to be downright impossible to find work in this economy.

Call the authorities to find out if you have warrants and turn yourself in if you do.

I don't have a lot of good suggestions for you, other than to be upfront and list them on the job application when they ask for criminal history. You cannot automatically be disbarred from employment because of it, but employers are allowed to choose who they hire. Being honest is very important at this point in your life, people will appreciate the honesty even if they choose not to hire you. The ones that do, even after you told them about your past, will hire you because of your current honesty, and you don't have the risk of getting fired if they later find out. And you don't want a termination to show up on your employment history - that just about makes you unhireable regardless of other things.

Smaller companies may not run background checks or ask for criminal history. Once you have a couple years work history, your criminal background shouldn't matter as much.

The only other thing is to make sure the jobs you do are ones that won't tempt you into doing something bad again. If you did petty theft in the past, jobs that involve handling money or credit cards may be tempting. But something like being a shuttle bus driver won't tempt you as much.

Good luck to you.
