I know the gambling is cheaper
this is by far the BEST downtown hotel, competes with the mid level strip hotels... i love this place.. the pool is downright awesome (shark tank).. also there is a private pool up by the cabanas ( you don't have to rent a cabana to use it)... rooms are good to very nice.. try to upgrade....

foodwise, i like the gn. they have grotto (although they just raised the prices so to me its only ok)... chart house (seafood).. excellent but pricey.. the buffet (wouldnt recommend any of them that are downtown.. and for $30, you can eat like a king at the bellagio.... other restaurants downtown, ranch steak house at Binions is very very good.. don't fall for the Smart water.. notice ALL the bottles of it, they fill it in the back of the house..(waiter confided in us)... also make sure you check out Carl Ferris.. awesome Sax player on Fremont Street.... for other restaurants, go to restaurant.com there are several listed that are in the Fremont area...

if you need more info, dm me

OK, I had to say something here. A lot of advice coming from those that think that if they like a particular place that they went to this one time they visited, all others must be crappy. Not so.

Vegas has something for every kind of visitor. Depending on the goals and budget of your trip, that's where you should stay. The topic is "Las Vegas on the Cheap" so I'm guessing the goal is to not spend a ton of money but still get value. But the question that remains is still "What do you want to see or do?". Here are some specific questions with general answers that the experts can fill the details to, with budget and value in mind:

Q: Do you want to see the luxurious and glitzy billion dollar casinos on the strip? Is that all you want to see and do?
A: Stay in the heart of the strip at the casino of your choice, but get the most modest accommodations you can. The standard rooms at those casinos these days are pretty nice. It only gets better and goes up in price from there. But from a budget point of view, usually in Vegas the room is where you sleep and leave your stuff, and that's it. The attractions are OUTSIDE the room (well, most of them at least ). So why have less money before you even get to where you want to go? Deals can be had if you aren't particular about where you want to be. If no transportation, stay towards the center of the strip so everywhere becomes walking distance. Dining can be had for cheap too, just plan ahead and see the forum threads about nice but reasonably priced restaurants around there. Locals can't be going to the most expensive restaurants regularly so they know what's up. If wanting to eat as cheap as possible, find some smaller casinos wedged between the luxury casinos and a lot of them have deals 24/7. As for attractions, there are tons of free things to see and do in every casino. From live bands and dancing, to indoor gardens and outdoor dancing waters. You need not buy a ticket to a show to be entertained there.

Q: Do you want to see classic Las Vegas with a modern twist and still be in close proximity to the strip?
A: Stay at the hotel of your choice on Fremont. Lots to see and do there which can definitely be done "on the cheap". How cheap is up to you, but it can be done there. The spectrum of where to stay can go from scary to excellent, just depends on your budget and comfort level. Lots of dining deals, entertainment at the Fremont Experience has instrumentalists, live bands, artists doing their thing outside, etc. You get a different view of Vegas here. Still the gambling and the lights and sounds and entertainment, just without the effort of being so budget conscious as you would be on the strip.

Q: Do you have your own transportation and see a lot of things but stay off the strip?
A: Stay at a nicer, locals type casino like Orleans. Great value, a decent casino in its own right when you don't want to leave, and good proximity from the strip.

Q: Do you just want to have the resort experience and take in everything one casino has to offer your entire stay, no matter where it is?
A: Since transportation isn't so important, you'll want to be at a casino that has a comfortable atmosphere and has everything in it that you could possibly want without needing to go elsewhere because of your budget. The newer, nicer local-driven casinos may just be for you. There is still a variety of choices to be had, some examples would be Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock, M, and such. Places like these are great for an all-in-one experience. Dining can be from really good buffets that is moderately priced, to their cafes of which still has great food, and usually has other restaurants too. Even sometimes shopping centers adjacent to them. Live bands playing, bars that are usually hopping with locals and tourists alike, good shows for reasonable ticket prices, and overall luxurious atmosphere without feeling like you are out of your wallet's or purse's comfort zone.

The point is, when you decide what you want to see and do when you visit, you can get a recommendation that can help your budget accomplish it. Especially from locals. That seems a bit funny that locals would give advice to tourists, but in my experience, locals are always getting their own visitors who want to know where they should stay and what they should do. Living in Vegas gives them the insight, along with hearing and seeing local advertising and other things that can provide the value that using a search engine usually just can't give you. Plus, locals want to have fun sometimes too, so they know how to have a good time just like a tourist without being sucked in by the glitz and not breaking the bank.

Have a great time!

Reading a lot about Fremont Street... of all the times I've been to Vegas, don't think I've gone that far... Is it safe for two women and two teenage boys to be walking around during the evening hours? (not late night)

Stick to the Fremont Street Experience, which is well-lit, and you'll be fine. Some of the parking areas can be a little dicey after dark, so I would recommend using valet at one of the bigger hotels, such as the Golden Nugget.

Can it be done?

Post suggestions of affordable things to do, visit, and places to eat.
Some of the weekday rooms in July and August at the Luxor are as low as $55 that is as cheap as Days Inns and Best Westerns I've stayed at in small towns in West Texas and southern Virginia. You can easily do a Hoover Dam tour with less than $100. Its all about how much you like to gamble really. The buffets in downtown are much cheaper, when I was there 3 years ago there was $9.99 buffet I think in the Fitzgerald's or Golden Nugget.

I'm planning a stop in Las Vegas on a cross country trip in August.
