Hi everyone.

First time poster but I've been lurking these forums for a few days now. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm 36, single with no kids and I'm sooo ready to move to Las Vegas, I've visited there a few times. I've been here in Albuquerque for 24 years and don't have ANY family here at all. I'm pretty much by myself here and people always tell me "what the hell are you doing here in the Land of Entrapment" LOL! My family all live throughout Texas. Anyways, I've been working in the nightclub business for 13 years now and have experience as a barbacker, Security/Doorman and as manager for a multi million dollar a year strip club.

I'm planning on moving to Las Vegas by mid December. I don't have a job lined up but because of my current job I know a few people in Las Vegas (former Abq residents) who "could possibly" help me get a foot in the door somewhere at a club/bar in Vegas. It's not a guarantee of course but I'm prepared to start anywhere or do anything else in the short term to get settled in.

However, the main reason of my move to Las Vegas is NOT because I want to continue to work in the bar/nightclub business. It's simply not my calling but I'm willing to continue to do it if it pays the bills. My true "dream job" is anything in the IT business. I'm planning on taking my A+ CompTIA test by late November. I want to get out of the bar/nightclub business and eventually land an IT job. I know I'll have to start at the bottom but I'm willing to do that. Even a $9-15/hr part time PC Repair/Tech job sounds lovely to me after what I've been doing for so many years. What can I say..I love computers.

Here are my questions:

1. I'll be on a $5000 budget when I get there and most likely no job lined up (I'm assuming my connections won't help). Are there 2 bdr Apts for around $650 or less? I absolutely need an extra bedroom for my computer/exercise room.

2. I'm not too concerned about location right now. Long term I'm hoping to finally buy a home or move to an upscale place. I keep hearing Summerlin is nice. Where's a decent place to start in LV? Not ghetto but decent!

3. How's the IT industry in Vegas? I've been looking at Craigslist and it seems for every entry level IT job in ABQ, 4-5 pop up in Vegas. Like I said, I'll be looking for an entry level position since I'll be newly certified. I keep hearing in these forums it's impossible to land a "good IT job". But most of the jobs they are talking about are high paying jobs that demand tons of experience. Plus the people searching for those jobs are laid off workers with a family and a mortgage who can't settle for entry level positions. Me, I just want to make the transition to the IT field so anything available is a step up for me.

4. In NM you have to be alcohol certified to work at a place that sells liquor. I'm assuming LV is the same. If the bar/nightclub is in a casino will I have to get any other form of certification?

Thanks in advance any other information is greatly appreciated.

Employment in Vegas right now is seriously in the toilet. If you have an 'in' anywhere, use it to just get a job. Worry about moving into computers later. Strip club/hospitality experience is worth more here than an A+ any day.

Summerlin is nice but I seriously doubt you will get a 2br apt for 650 per month.

These aren't easy times. Use what you know that has value to get you here. CL is not a good way to judge the jobs available here. MOST of the jobs listed on CL and scammers, not real.

Yes you need a card for serving alcohol. Other folks know the details much better than I do.

After reading these forums it really doesn't sound any different than in Albuquerque. There's no jobs here either. If I'm going to continue what I do right now, might as well do it at a place where there's more variety and potential to make more money.

Quick question if you or anyone else can answer: Realizing the economy is bad all over why is Vegas still getting flooded with so many people every month??

Is N. Las Vegas an area where I might find a decent 2br? I'm Hispanic and wouldn't mind living near a neighborhood with other minorities. Again, I'm not looking to find the a cheapest ghetto either. LOL!

I think people come to Vegas for the lifestyle, weather, and entertainment. Also it's just a plain fun place to live. It attracts it's share of low-lifes but there are a lot of rugged individualists too. Vegas has a favorable tax structure compared to lots of other places. Lots of people choose to retire here as well.

Middle, working class, Vegas is pretty diverse. On my little street there are Caucasians, Asians, African Americans, and Hispanics. A couple people are from Germany.

I hope you use the 'Juice' and get a job at one of the clubs. If you do, in what area of town will you be working?

Parts of NLV are great and there are some places I wouldn't suggest to my worst enemy. And I like urban life. If it scares me, it's bad.

Other than obtaining a job, there is no reason for you to stay in Albuquerque. It's just not as lively and fun as Las Vegas is. For a single person with no strings attached, moving here is a no brainer.

IT jobs are not plentiful, sad to say and the casinos use antiquated operating systems. If you're a whiz with a computer, why not seek a job with a computer repair place or start your own business if you're computer savvy that way? You know, expand your horizons?

Take a look here:

Internet jobs - Las Vegas, NV | Simply Hired

With people moving here still, jobs are even harder to come by, with folks taking low paying jobs out of their field just to pay the bills, so keep that in mind.

If you can find employment in the bartending section, you'll probably need a Sheriff's card (if there's gaming) and a TAM card...no biggies and about $150.00 for both? I might be wrong on that, it's been a while, perhaps someone who just got those certs can give a more accurate figure.

Summerlin is nice, so is Aliante (North Las Vegas) Green Valley, the Southwest part of the valley (Rhodes Ranch as an example), Stallion Mountain, Centennial Hills, Henderson...so many nice areas all around the valley, really.

Whatever you decide to do, best wishes to you DA Lobo, plan wisely though, k?

Let's be realistic...

Question #1 - $5000 budget, not enough, you need at least 6 months living expenses.. 2BR at 650??? Never gonna happen, 2BR in Summerlin not even close.. I don't think you can even get a 1br for that in a good area unless you have roomies.

Question #2 - Nice area at $650, nada.... at $650 rough eastern area for sure if you are lucky..

Question #3 - Jobs are so hard to come by.. For IT, you should be looking at Cali

Question #4 - You will need cards. If there are ANY skeletons in your closet, even DWIs, you have a problem.

All true. I think I live in one of those 'rough' eastern areas......

I speak from the perspective of having more than 30 years networking/IT experience. The A+ is the IT equivalent of being able to dress yourself. It's nice but it's not easy to turn into money. People here are desperate for work. Yes, people with mortgages and families will take those jobs. It's enough to put food on the table. An opening at Wal Mart will get hundreds of applicants. On the news today....15 openings on the fire dept and they will LIMIT the search to the first 1500 applicants. They showed pictures of people who had been lined up most of the night waiting.

I have a friend who is in serious trouble because he can't find a job. Any job. He has college degrees and experience. He goes to Labor Ready(any job day labor) at 5:30 am. He sits and waits for ANY job till 9am. Today there was no work at all so at 9am it's back to looking for anything he can find to bring in money. Tomorrow morning he will be back at Labor Ready at 5:30 am. BTW, he is also a veteran. He may be homeless by Friday.

Seriously, if you really want to do this, drive out and stay a few weeks at an extended stay place for cheap. Look for work. If you hit the jackpot, great. If not, you can go back home intact.

I hate to say it but I do have 2 DWI's from a few years ago. Does that mean I'm disqualified from getting those cards??

don't know if you are disqualified, but ALOT of jobs will look at this... for example, even before interviewing for amazon for a warehouse position, you would be disqualified... also you may want to check and see how much your insurance will SKYROCKET here.

Your biggest problem will be that you'll be heading out for lunch one day, and you'll have an uncontrollable craving for something...anything...cooked with with green chilis. You won't find it, so you start to seriously question your decision to move away from New Mexico. Then you start to notice other things like not much art, no zoo, mediocre museums, the light in the sky just doesn't do it for you, seldom see a rainbow, the colors of nature are artificial...stuff like that. But you'll like it here.
