You keep referring to "research."

What research?

The number of nonfiction books purchased by residents??

You've got to be kidding me.

So, if someone purchases a book written by Tolstoy, Hemmingway, Melville, etc., they get no credit whatsoever according to this "research."

But if they purchase Sarah Palin's latest incoherent diatribe, all of a sudden they're intelligent?!

Yeah, okay. Gotcha.

In general Las Vegas is a blue collar town. I think it is smarter than most blue collar towns. It will not compete with San Jose for computer scientists...than again did you ever see a computer scientist shake his or her booty worth watching?

Our artists are physical and actually pretty well paid. Know anyone with a degree in stilt walking? Or a Phd in lap dancing? Or even a 2 year degree in bed making?

Let the intellectually driven live in the tri-cities or Silicon Valley.
Okay please tell me how it "may well be more intelligent not to vote". I am genuinely curious.

People still purchase non-fiction at least in other cities. I spent most of yesterday packing books so I know this. I use the internet as an additional resource. Interesting to find that I am behind the times in that respect. Perhaps many respects, because I think its a stretch to consider lap dancing or bed making an art form.

No, I have never seen a computer scientist shake their booty...but I am 99.9% sure he/she would be my choice for neighbor over anyone involved in shaking their booty for a living.

In the past one of the strong points of Vegas has been that it is an affordable city where blue collar workers are paid well and generally appreciated more so than they are in many other cities. Hopefully, as it makes a comeback it will continue on as haven for the working class. I agree there are many skilled and intelligent trades people here...It's not fair to judge based on occupation alone. People have many reasons for choosing the jobs that they do. 9-5 isn't for everyone and often times for legit reasons.

And YES, def let the intellectually driven live elsewhere...I strongly encourage them to do so.

Also I just happened to notice you never came forward with any rational defense (ok ANY DEFENSE) in your comparison of Detroit and Houston...could that be because there isn't one??? That's okay, I wouldn't want to hijack this thread anyway.

Las Vegas had nothing to do with it. We've seen posters like you so many times before come on here and berate the city because something negative happened in their life, THEY won't take the blame, so it HAD to be Las Vegas. I have a few friends who are divorced, one in Houston, one in NYC and yet another San Diego. They don't blame the places where they live because of their failed relationships.

Honestly, tell us where you think is the best place and we can scour the internet and drag up countless negative reports about it. Any city in any state.

I mean, c'mon now. Stop trolling and making excuses. Anytime you're going to demean a city and the people who call it home, you're going to incite anger in the natives.

So you post links to websites about how Las Vegas lacks this, or how Las Vegas is last in that, all to validate why in your mind "it's baaaaddd". It's a resort city! Always was and always will be! People that move here are always from somewhere else and educated elsewhere as well, so if the education thing is bothering you so much, take it up with the government. It shows what a sorry state our country's entire school system is in!

You couldn't find anything to do with your kids in the 10 years you're here, when it was hot out? C'mon, there are playgroups, the YMCA, summer camps, classes for further instruction (music, art, etc.). Why don't you be honest and state that you couldn't afford to keep your kids busy during the day when it was hot? Don't use the heat as yet another excuse. Surely, you knew it was the DESERT when you moved here?

Wise up, pack up, grow up, get out, don't look back, and whatever you do...adjust your life game plan and look inside yourself so that YOU don't make the same mistakes again.

Be well, and most of all, I truly hope you find the peace and happiness you're searching for!
No disrespect intended, but folks like you are yet another reason Las Vegas ranks last. You berate me because I don't like a geographic location that you like due mostly to the knuckle head population. I haven't said anything that has not been said or reported before.

I've been here 5 years after the divorce and, nope, still don't care for it. I know a lot of people in the same boat. In reality, there are very few people that like Vegas unless you're a tourist and can leave. It's just a fact. You said it, resort town.

I'm not like "other posters" and I don't take blame; I take responsibility. I can't say I have made perfect choices in my life and anyone that does obviously is either off their rocker or narcissistic. Again, like much of the population here.

LOL.. natives? I have met about 10 maybe 12 people who are actually natives of Las Vegas in the 10 years I have been here and most of them don't like living here either! My son is a native having been born here.

Oh, btw, I do my part in trying to make this place a better community. I am involved in the school system. I became both a girl scout leader and a boy scout leader because no other parents would step up to the plate! I was willing to commit flexing my work schedule to be a volunteer crossing guard to make sure children weren't plowed down by inconsiderate drivers and not 1 other parent would volunteer. Oh, but a lot of the parents are glad to pawn off their kids while they go to a casino and gamble all night.

I get it already. Some of you like living here and you're good with it. Fine. I don't, I'm not and I will leave when I can taking my money with me to, God willing, a more family friendly community that actually values community.

I guess that's a part of the problem here for me. I come from an academic environment to here. Talk about culture shock!

I will take your advice as quickly as possible. Thanks for not being nasty about it.

No, dear. It is that you live in a city where education is less valued than other places, not that you are dumb. Of course, just having a degree doesn't guarantee employment anywhere.

Wow!!! You have so much rage in you!!!

Go ahead and vent some more, we're here to listen. It will make you feel better to let all your pent up rage out in the open.

As I have said many times from the 3 and a half years experience of living here in Vegas, this town is very good in eliminating the weak. Unfortunately, that describes sierramadre44 to a tee. Las Vegas was never your problem. You will soon find out the grass is not always greener on the other side. That is why the Las Vegas section has so many trolls from people who left the city. They could not make it here, so they left. They are even more unhappy in their new city, so they try to bring us locals down because deep down they are jealous. Unfortunately for them, we are just to smart for that, regardless of what any "articles" say.

I've been willing to consider most the points you've made, but now you're just talking crazy.
