I am a single mother with 3 young boys and I am thinking about relocating to las vegas, nv from ohio. We need a change of scenery, pace, warm weather and just a new beginning. I have a Section 8 housing choice voucher, and I am asking for any tips, information, anything on what I need to be aware of. Best/safe neighborhoods, schools, jobs, lifestyle etc. I would greatly appreciate whatever anyone can offer! Thanks so much.

I wouldn't recommend Las Vegas for you, without a job offer in hand, especially given the following:
  • Our economy is really, really bad
  • Our unemployment rate is obscene
  • Our public schools are spotty at best
  • It's extremely difficult to make new friends and build support networks - important when you have three kids.
  • Our public services are financially strapped - Nevada is heading the same route of California

If it's a weather thing, there's lots of cities in states like Texas in far better shape.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Why do you think others should feel obligated to subsidize your family living expenses?

I would look for a state where you could rebuild your life out of welfare. Where you can get some adult education and get off the system.

If you are looking to stay in the same hole and not get off the system, I'm sure there are plenty of states that will enable you.

How about New Orleans?

The OP didn't ask what your opinions are of Section 8 or your opinion of her situation. Read the question. If you don't have something helpful to say then please refrain from posting.

Thank you.

Your housing and living expenses will be higher in Las Vegas. I would not suggest moving out here unless you have a higher paying job lined up.

That is great to hear! Way too many American cities are completely destroyed because of Section 8.

Personally, Vegas is not the place to raise children when you cannot afford anything but section 8 housing. Education is the best gift you can provide yourself and your children. Vegas is not the place for that education.

I would research an East Coast state. If you are looking for better climate, Southeast. Most states on the East Coast are going to have better schools in any area better than here in Vegas.

Do you have family somewhere you can test the waters?
