It is my understanding that the red sandstone was originally laid down on top of the grey limestone, and what you see is a result of the now top layer of limestone being heavier. But don't quote me on that...

Thanks. I use a pretty standard point and shoot camera. Sony DSC-W350. The first picture I used the color enhance feature. The rest are as is. Here's a strange type of flower that grew all over the desert around the Colorado river.

Thanks VLWH. Imageshack doesn't always work right for me. While I'm going, here's another closeup. Spend more than a few minutes in the desert and you will find it's quite alive. These grasshoppers are camouflage masters.

I really need to get that snake pic in here. It was sharing the bathroom with me at Lake Mead yesterday. What a surprise that was.

http://www.colinlmiller.com/wildlife...a/snake_02.jpg

This snake in the link looked a lot like the one that shared the bathroom with me at Lake Mead on monday afternoon, late in the day towards evening.
It went right past me, but I couldn't see it because of my sunglasses that block out many things, like snakes for instance. My husband said it was about 6 feet long. Luckily, it did not have a rattle on the end of it's tail. I almost stepped on it at first, not seeing it...
It slithered behind the trash can in the small rest room, and I had a choice to either use that rest room, or the one on the other side that had spiders all over the place and one big one right on the wall by the toilet. I chose the snake one instead.
