Las Vegas has very good trash service and pretty lousey recycling. Attempts to improve it have all been tied to a reduction in the trash service and have gone nowhere. It is also not clear how much of that which is recycled stays recycled...

Trash service is obligatory and very inexpensive. In some complexes it is covered by HOA fees.

There is no charge for recycling...so no refund.

You don't pay for recycling, it's just good citizenship to do it. They give you three bins to separate glass, plastic/aluminum, and paper, but it's no longer necessary to do so. They have different trucks now, and they just throw it all in together, so it's easy to recycle and it's free. Actually they should pay you but don't hold your breath on that. There have been people going around in trucks stealing the recycle stuff and selling it. But I don't care how it gets to the recycle center as long as it gets there and it's out of my house.

My savings come from needing a smaller (cheaper) trash can. I put out more recycling than garbage.

We have the commingled bin now. It looks like the regular trash container, but it has a blue lid. We put them out once a week with the trash. Putting out trash once a week is a pain for some, and since they implemented that, we now keep the trash containers in the back yard so we don't faint from the smell in the garage where they used to be kept. Worse in summer.

Does anyone know of any other city that has garbage pickup twice a week? It seems to be rare.

In Albuquerque you weren't allowed to use garbage cans when I lived there. Everything had to be in a box or plastic container. Whatever you put out went in the truck. I wonder if the paper or plastic issue has changed that?

My parents live in Sun City AZ. They have their trash picked up twice a week.

Albuquerque was once a week, but trucks would make extra trips to large business centers and complexes on request.
