Good weather and lots of money will always attract some less than desirable elements. There is crime here but most of it is theft and the majority of the violent crime is between people who know each other.

I stupidly left my car parked on the street one night and some kids did a run through the neighborhood hitting parked cars with a baseball bat. I lost my driver's side mirror. It was my own fault.

Just like any other city, you need to be observant and aware of what's going on around you. Be reasonably careful. There's no reason to be afraid at all.

Just because the city has an higher than average property crimes rate doesn't make it unsafe, it just means if you are smart and follow basic security measures you are less likely to be a victim. No different than any other city in the U.S.

Car insurance is sky high; I think it is clear why. I've met some quality people from CCSD (graduates), but they are by far the exception and not the rule on what kind of people attend their schools, and what career path they are on. Good to see LVPD busting them, (for the cameras, anyway) and the judges awarding them room and board.
A lot of the Virginia suburbs are much worse than Vegas. Take Sterling for example, it is home to a lot of members of MS-13. When I lived in Ashburn, the gangs were closing in all around us and the only way to totally escape the madness was to move out to Round Hill or west towards Charles Town. Now if you really want worse than Vegas, go down 95 to Richmond.

Once again, we have someone who doesn't know all the facts before making an alarmist conclusion.

WHAT? It was YOUR fault that some kids (who obviously do not have respect for other people's property) hit your car with a baseball bat? Are you kidding? That was not your fault.

Just because a car is parked on the street does not automatically make it public property! You know this. And, if it were automatically assumed public property because it is parked on a street, that does not give the kids a right to destroy it. It is a crime no matter how you look at it.

Now, I love to have my car in the garage, but I have too much junk right now for me to pull it in. I park it in my drive or in front of my drive on the street. It concerns me, sure, but I have limited choices. I, however, do not expect someone to valdalise my car just because its parked on the street.

Nope. It was number 1 in car theft a while back. No longer true. It was never high in property crimes.

I did some research for the most current car theft rates. We are now #7 on the list.Modesto is #1. It looks like the bait cars are helping lowering the rate of car theft.

I was too lazy to move my car! Yes those kids did something very wrong and deserved to be taught a lesson. One of the neighbors chased them but they got away. They did quite a bit of damage to other folks vehicles.
