JobConnect no longer pays for the Sheriff's Card, as of the first of the year. It's now handled on line via the Attorney General's office. I found this out when I was looking into becoming a security guard.

Another job that requires a special permit is cab driving, and that costs close to $200. For that one you need a drug test, DOT physical, plus the fees to the Taxicab Authority. However, you can get a lot of discounts at restaurants and such with your TA permit. My favorite was the cab driver special at Ellis Island. Steak, two eggs, home style potatoes, toast, and coffee for $3.99, and it was pretty good.

no....it's just that everyone wants a piece of the action....the sheriffs card used to be required for ANY and ALL positions within a hotel/casino...in the old days it was $7.50..you went to the sherrifs office...paid your money...filled out their form and two weeks later came back to get the card....if everything was ok they gave you the card....if you were wanted for something they arrested you....

you could not have been convicted of any major crime in the last 10 years...like mass murder....

The $7.50 went to the "Sheriffs Discretionary Fund". This money was used, as the sheriff wanted to use it....sometimes to send 'undesireables' back home on a chartered plane.[we had class in those days] sometimes to complete an addition to the sheriffs house...

Lamb also had to pay off his goon squad, That line in the movie Casino is not far from the truth. " This Sherriff is a real cowboy, even the coppers are not afraid to burry people out in the desert.

I wouldnt be surprised if there were people buried under a lot of new homes out in the furthest extents of the city (Centennial Hills, Aliante, Summerlin, Parts of Henderson probably) When those areas were considered the middle of the desert and Vegas was a small town, the probably buried them there and were never found when all the new construction rolled in

Could be, there was an area near the Blue Diamond Gypsum Mine where bodies were found that were murdered execution style and their teeth was removed.

the greates sheriff story is from around 1969 or so....I-15 didn't exist. the road coming into town was two lane blacktop across the Roach Dry Lake into Whiskey Petes....Sheriff got word that a LARGE group of Hells Angels were coming into Vegas and were going to "Take over the Town". sheriff and one Deputy drove out to Petes...and parked across the hwy....Angels came cruising acorss the dry lake bed...sheriff stood there with a shotgun in his arm....Angels stopped...sheriff said turn around and go home....angels laughed at him....Sheriff blew the font wheel and spoke off of the first bike with the shotgun...Angels went home.....

It's only if you plan to serve drinks that you need the TAM card, and only if you plan to serve food or drinks that you need a health card. If you plan to work in a casino (or sell certain things, if I remember right, like cars for instance) you'll need the Sheriff's card.

You really don't need, nor can you get, most of those until you have been officially hired by someone.

If you are a Nevada resident, and unemployed, you can go to Nevada's JobConnect (no space intended) and get vouchers for the cards you need. The CEP program will pay for them. You'll need a CEP form letter filled out by your new employer before you get the vouchers. You'll get the form letter at JobConnect. Take your SS Card and NV DL or NV ID when you go in. Don't forget the fingerprinting that you'll need for the Sheriff's card either. They'll pay for that too.

Thanks Buzz! I was reading this thread wondering what on earth all of these things were, as we've lived and worked in Nevada for over a year and never even heard of them. It's because we aren't in that industry, so we don't actually need them.
