Hi Guys,

I know the "Is Las Vegas a Good Place to Live?" thread has been done to death here, but none of them have addressed whether it is a good place to live for a non-family man. Let me tell you about myself. I am a single 27 year-old gay man from Des Moines, IA. I just earned my PharmD (pharmacist professional degree) and am looking for a new place outside of Iowa to live. I have no children and have no plans to have children at the moment so I don't care about school systems very much. I have a pharmacy degree and since pharmacists are relatively high in demand even in this job market, I am confident that I will be able to find a job... so how good/bad Vegas' job market is does not really concern me much. Most pharmacist jobs pay the same throughout the nation at about $90K-$100K to start. I plan on renting an apartment when I get there, so I am only concerned with apartment rent prices, NOT housing prices. I enjoy playing poker but are by no means a gambling addict. I enjoy the occasional drink or two but are by no means a drunk. And I don't do drugs. My hobbies are watching independent movies, seeing indie bands, playing poker, and hiking.

My concerns are the gay scene and the overall scene in Las Vegas. Are there quality twentysomethings (both gay and not gay) in Vegas or do they lack substance relative to other major cities? Are the people there uneducated and only like to party? What is the nightlife like there? Is Vegas a difficult city to be single in? Is Vegas a difficult city to be gay in? Are all the gay guys living in Vegas chippendales? Ha, you get my point. And overall, is Vegas a good place to live given MY situation (not the same as someone raising 3 kids on a $40000 salary).

Cheers!

Las Vegas is like any other city, there are gay men and women living both in and out of the closet....and in all walks of life....some have substance some don't.....like anything else in life....ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.

I personally don't think the gay scene there is impressive at all. There is just one gay club (Krave) which is nice and on the strip but other than that, the bars I went to seemed downright ghetto!

For substance, I'd make a detour to Phoenix or Tucson. 60% of those that relocate to AZ come from the Midwest, more down-to-earth, more conservative, more substance. It's not that there's isn't people of substance here, you'll just have to dig deeper.

From MN, I first moved to Phoenix. Big comparisons between these two cities. IMO, the Gay scene is ten times better there.

Also remember, the drawbacks to a 24 hour city. People working and sleeping every assortment of hours here. Meet someone you like at a bar here, if you're a 9-5er, you may never have an opportunity to share a weekend getaway with that person, if they work at the casino's.

And given all the tourists in this town, that person you really take a liking to at a bar one night, he could be an out-of-towner. If you're into one-night stands, then no problem.

But you say you like to play poker. And if that's a high priority for you,
then I probably won't be able to detour you to AZ.

You would be fine in Portland. Our Mayor is openly gay and survived a recall for having sex with a minor.

If you're going to be gay, might as well do it in West Hollywood....

Agree, Seattle is estimated to be one in six GLB, very open and friendly. Excellent opportunities if seeking hospital based pharmacy employment.
