I'd try the LVRJ hardcopy (Sunday for more ads) and look at the "for sale by owner" section. What are you in the market for?

Maybe airics can help. He works at an auto auction and has been in the car business in the past.

I don't think I'll ever buy from anyone but Car Max from now on. When we bought our Honda it was the only time car buying was ever a pleasant experience. Saturn was pretty good too if you like Saturns. But now I guess Saturn has gone or is going away. Too bad GM won't sell all it's cars (what there is left of them) that way.

Sounds like you're in a spot similar to the one I was in last January. Looked through stuff like Craigslist, Auto Trader, LVRJ, ebay, even (gasp) dealers. I was primarily looking at used cars between $3,000 to $8,000, mostly at the upper end of that range - was willing to go lower for an older car if it was good value. Having never bought a new car, I was looking for a reasonable late model used car that had already taken a depreciation hit. Always been a used car guy to get better value.

You'd think a few people in this town would be in need of cash & willing to make a deal, but anyone I talked to wanted more than blue book value for their car & wouldn't budge. Maybe blue book value needs a bump in this climate where cars can last longer, but some of the stuff I saw was WAY over book. Maybe I caught the wrong people on the wrong day as well, but people were surprisingly unwilling to negotiate (negotiation's generally been a strength of mine).

I ran into a LOT of curbstoners, you know, the guy who's selling a car 'for a friend'. Riiiigghht. In reality, they're small-time (unlicensed) 'dealers' trying to move cars as if it's a private-party sale - I found them pretty easy to sniff out & there were a lot of them out there.

After talking to a few friends, a couple suggested looking at new cars with the weak economy. Their logic was this: even if I take a depreciation hit, that could be offset if I negotiated a good deal. In addition, I'd know the history of the car from day one. In this climate, I could expect a car to last 10-15 (or more) years easily if I take good care of it. A new car is something I never would've considered in Chicago with the winters, road salt & using bumpers as 'guides' when parking in the city.

Ultimately, I bought a new car, a 2008 Kia Optima LX (AT/AC/PW/PL/CD/CC/etc) just as the 2009s were set to come out. The dealer had tons of inventory & was desperate to move it, a big rebate was just announced & I was able to work off a deal that a friend had negotiated on a similar car. It took the usual BS of hours of tough negotiating & getting up a few times to leave, but ultimately I bought a car that stickered for over $19K for $10,850 before TTL. Add in a 5 yr, 60K bumper to bumper factory warranty & I was good to go.

So, I guess that's my roundabout way of saying "consider everything". I NEVER would've expected to wind up buying a new car last January, but I did. I'm still very happy with it; it's been a solid car, great mileage, put in a K&N lifetime air filter, switched to synthetic oil & best of all I know its entire history. If anything comes up, either I did it or it's a manufacturer problem.

If you do look at new cars, be prepared (know invoice/rebates/etc), stick to your guns & negotiate hard. GM is dealing right now on Pontiac & Saturn stuff; not my cup of tea, but you can probably get some sweet deals since they're going bye-bye. Otherwise, beware the curbstoners. My opinion is Craigslist is still probably your best bet, but you gotta have thick skin & be willing to wade through a lot of flakes & nut-jobs. What's the old saying, you've got to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince? Pucker up.

ha ha ha ha uhmmmm no. i never did like fixing my car everyday before i had to go to work it would be too much of a reminder of my first car

what i would really like is a 2005-2008 Audi TT coupe (not convertable) black on black or a gunmetal color on black interior would work too. for an audi i would settle for a cvt transmission but prefer manual. I hate automatics and cant drive them for ****

I have found a couple manual transmissions for under 25 but i would have to have had them transported to vegas and then all the other stuff i would rather just buy local... Plus i think 25 is still a little high...

If i cant find my dream TT... then I have also thought about the more economically friendly Nissian Altima Coupe. looking for a black on black. will only consider the 6 spd manual transmission. NO CVT, NO AUTOMATICS.

I really hate automatics.... I never even saw one until i hit 15 and took drivers ed... to this day i have driven an automatic so few times. i serious cant drive them.. i just cant function without the clutch... ha ha ha ha hah

if you are looking for a cheap car, craigslist might be the way to go... i personally don't like selling the older stuff because when it breaks, it is "always" my fault. for the high dollar stuff.. never craigslist... be very careful of scammers and curbstoners.. and avoid salvage cars.. the price is much less but remember you get what you pay for...
