Hi all

we r considering selma bartlett school for our second grader. Is there any parents here who send their kids to this school? i've heard it's one of the best in the valley but i would like to know what parents really think. Pls share your thoughts.
Right now my son is attending challenger school and we r really happy with it. But current economy is forcing us to make this change
is there any accelerated programs for math and english in Bartlett?
Also do i need to enroll him in "kumon" or "math monkey" or some such programs? Pls advice

i don't think there are any accelerated programs, there may be a GATE class a couple times a week, but there's usually no english or math involved...i remember when i went to ES, everyone had to go at the same pace as the slowest kid, but there were also different reading and math groups sometimes, but it was still very difficult for the teacher to pay attention...

I emailed our potential elem school (we are moving there over the summer) and was told this is the program they use.

Envision Math

Math Textbooks & Resources for Teachers – Pearson Education (http://www.pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PSZ153&PMDbSiteId=2781&PMDbSolut ionId=6724&PMDbSubSolutionId=6731&PMDbCategoryId=8 06&PMDbProgramId=34350&level=4&prognav=pt - broken link)

I am going to buy a used textbook or workbook (or something) and look through it with my kids and their current teachers to see where the differences lie so they are ready for the transition.

I teach 3rd grade here in Vegas. EnVisions is a fairly fast paced program (meaning that there are a lot of topics covered per grade level, but you can't stay on one topic for too long). There are some cool technology components. The students can access their books online, take tests, and view short video clips. One thing I like is the "center" activities that go along as a practice opportunity for each lesson.

Are you more used to a hands-on/manipulative type program? There are opportunities with EnVisions for hands-on experiences.

We use Chicago Everyday Math and my 2nd grader is still having trouble with double digit addition and subtraction....sigh. I am concerned she will have trouble with the transition. My 1st and 5th graders will be fine regardless. My only concern for the 5th grader is here 6th is still elementary and there it is middle, so I hope he is ready for the change.

EnVisions Math covers double and triple digit addition and subtraction in 3rd grade. Second grade introduces the skills.....

OK, so it sounds like she will not have needed to master it before third? The types of problems we were working on last night were: 48+84=_____, 65-29=________ and so on... I am helping her learn how to carry and borrow the tens digit. The way Chicago Math works is that she may only get 3 or 4 of these types of problems on homework at the bottom of a page with mostly high-visual problems (think rods of 10s and cubes of 1s, pictures of coins, etc...).

In Las Vegas math, they have to count to 21 and be able to pay out stacks of chips
