Hey all,

I'm 34 in good shape, and for the past 3 weeks I have been having tightness in chest and sometimes cramps. I don't know if its diet or what, but am intersted in getting my heart checked. What's the best way of doing this? I googled something called EKG but not sure if this is the only/best way?

Btw, I don't have health insurance yet, doesn't kick in for another month (new employer). So looking at paying cash if anyone has an idea of costs? Or is this something that can be done at a urgent care?

Kinda clueless on this, any suggestions welcome!

thanks!

Be very careful. Clearly if you think this is a crisis don't avoid getting care. However if you are only a month out and can wait do it.

If it turns out you have a real problem you want to make sure you are covered. Otherwise you create a pre-existing condition and you may never be able to get covered.

Your best bet is not to try and schedule a medical test on your own. Most facilities would never do this without a Doctors prescription.

So you should at this point be trying to find a primary care physician on your forthcoming insurance plan and let them manage your visits.

This is how medicine works.

FYI: Basic EKG tests are painless, simple, and quick. Many Doctors will request them before surgical procedures. They are typically not very expensive. Basic test can be well under $100. However if you do not have insurance, the hospital or clinic can pretty much bill you anything they want. It is not uncommon for uninsured to pay as much as 7x what an insured person would pay.

This is why the system is so messed up!

Thanks for the tip.

I thought they changed that rule about the pre-existing conditions? I guess not. Good advice tho, I'll just wing it until insurance starts I guess...!

One tactic would be to schedule an appointment with an internal medicine specialist. Tell them you just haven't seen a doc in a few years and want a basic physical, ask if they have a cash discount. Tell the doc what's going on, and about your insurance, and he'll use that good old stethescope to detect anything obviously out of line with rhythm, murmurs, etc. He can learn a TON from that simple test. He'll ask you what sets the pain off, what can make it diminish, if there is other associated pain, etc.

If you have pain radiating to your left arm at the same time, go see someone asap.

Go to one of the Fremont Medical Centers in town. They take walk-ins, no appointment needed. Tell the doctor you don't have insurance and they will just charge you $75 for the visit. The EKG will be extra though.
