You don't have to. But some older folk may need to. It is odd but people lose the ability to relate. They retreat and become frightened of contact. The "paid" thing may well help break out of the shell.

Default What I noticed in Vegas

I've only visited there twice, and each time I was very saddened by the things I saw (and I live in Jersey so you know it had to be bad). A 25+ yr old rooting in the garbage outside a CVS...a (I assume) prostitute I struck up a conversation with at Trader Joe's who was a lonely, uneducated woman who had been there for 8 months and was isolated...wanting to go home. A mentally challenged man in line at Wal-mart holding his teddy bear (and talking to it like it was helping him shop) while scraping change out of his pocket. (A woman ahead of me in line worked at that store and said he came in EVERY DAY to buy candy.....another guy in line joined in the conversation and told us he volunteers at a homeless shelter and the city has recently closed missions to feed the homeless. I guess the cuts are affecting everyone.) I was so depressed myself after being there!! It seemed to me everyone was on the make and breezin through which I guess alot of them are, but I still can't figure out why it seemd so amplified there. Was just in Newark and Manhatten today and saw one person I think was homeless, and she seemed to have her s*&t together. LOL

Jeez, if you are looking for that kind of stuff to justify a prejudice about Las Vegas, it won't be hard to find. But I've lived here most of my life and I never run into that much misery. At least not in 99% of this town. You must have been staying downtown where there are lots of homeless people. They come here to take advantage of the weather and all the freebies just like any tourist does.

Most of them live that way because they want to. The ones that have just had some bad luck, like losing a job, don't want to be homeless and will usually not stay that way long.

But in your neck of the cactus (Rockefeller Plaza), I was tripping over them lying on the sidewalk. Same thing in Los Angeles. You'll trip over them lying on the stars on Hollywood Blvd. In New York it was winter time and people were lying on the steam grates to keep warm. BTW: What the heck are those all about anyway?

In downtown Las Vegas you'll see most of the homeless because they stay within walking distance of the shelters. It drives the business owners crazy. Many locals generally consider downtown as slumming. I saw a lot of misery when I worked down there too, but you can't make people get a job and live in a nice house if they don't want to.

But those people don't represent Las Vegas. They are less than 1%. We can't make them leave either, although the mayor has tried often enough. Try staying in a better part of town next time.

How about rent-a-drunk friend? I will not even charge anything. I only ask for beer to be provided.
