That's just what the casinos want you to think because kids don't gamble. But there is more to Las Vegas than The Strip, just like there is more to France than the wineries or museums. In fact, there is probably more illegal "sin" in most cities than legal "sin" here in Las Vegas. We just use it as a marketing tool. You can't really do anything you want here, legally or otherwise. And if kids weren't welcome, why would God have given us Circus Circus?

I just got this by email. We took our granddaughter to see it two years ago, and my daughter is taking her again this weekend. I might want to see it again myself. UNLVtickets

Aquarium at Silverton during feeding
Circus Circus
Fremont Street
Mirage: Volcano, white tigers, dolphins
Fishing at Desert Shores lakes
Games Works
M&M store
Bonnie Springs
Lion habitat in MGM

Anything else?

It's not for everyone, but my family and I try to make a public skate at Sobe Ice Arena in the Fiesta or Las Vegas Ice Center at least once a week.

Um, no.

Remember, there are FAMILIES here, and we want to, y'know, do stuff, too. Thus, the same attractions exist for visiting families too. You just have to get off the Strip.

Vegas tried family-friendly on the Strip once -didn't work out, because gambling and kids just don't mix, generally. But we have lots of wonderful things for families to do that don't involve so-called "sin".

As for Hollywood being more family friendly, I call shenanigans.

I used to play ice hockey so skating is fine. In fact my youngest has been asking to go.

As far as kids in Vegas, I bought a vacation property in Desert Shores, this is there first time and will not be the kids last trip there. We are off the strip and will only take the kids there once just to see it. I on the other hand will be making my fifth trip in 5 months, can't get enough.

Thanks for all your responses.

Family friendly came along in the 80's and worked for about 20 years. Then younger guys took over and decided the present image would do better. We'll see.

Since I fish twice a week, I can answer some of your angling questions.

You have to pay to get into Floyd Lamb. You need to pack heat to go to Lorenzi. You need barbless hooks for Desert Shores, since it's catch and release only there. I can't tell you much about Lake Mead, other than the best fishing is done from a boat, since I haven't fished there...yet. Your best bet is Sunset Park.

Just be sure to bring something for Maverick, the semi friendly goose. He's the one with the big knot on his forehead. He hates dogs, and does peck at some people. I'm one of the few people he let's pick him up, and he usually follows me back to my car.

Wherever you decide to fish, you do need a license. Yes, the game wardens do check, and yes, the do write some pretty big tickets. You can get a one day license for $9 for the first day, and $3 for each additional day. Depending on the age of your kids, they might not need licenses. If they do, they'll be cheaper. If they get bored and wander over to the swings, be sure to pull their lines out of the water. Once again, big tickets are available.

If you have any further questions beyond the basics, go to Bass Pro Shop, which is next to the Silverton. It's a great place, I love going there.

Sweet! My boy has been playing for just under a year and I have been looking into a novice adult league. Stay away from the Fri and Sat night public skates as they are packed (unless you are into that of course). My preference is the Sun session at Sobe (usually 1-5PM). Not too busy, and they Zamboni the ice halfway through the longer sessions (unlike LVIC). The weekday afternoon sessions at Sobe are usually pretty dead as well. Being in Desert Shores puts you about halfway in between both rinks, LVIC at Flamingo and 215 and Sobe at Smoke Ranch and Rancho. Maybe I'll see you out there. I'll be the guy that can only turn left.

my first read seemed to me like you were moving, and your parents were coming with the kids to help you/them. my first thought was that you were going to be pretty busy with the furniture, new house setup, etc. i would recommend some good books for the kids for the backyard, and some mojitos/lemonade for your parents instead of driving and going all over all the time. maybe some bikes, or those electric golf cart rentals. desert shores is beautiful.
