You will find Portland to be more familiar with northern euro-style socialism.

Could Lake Oswego compare with Summerlin? Two places that do everything but say "It's a good place for white people." If so, I would say Lake Oswego is double price of Summerlin.

Funny how down a lot of people are on here on Portland, Oregon. If you posted this on their board, probably just as bad if not worse about Las Vegas. Everything is so subjective.

Having lived in Portland before, and I loved living there by the way. The cost of living is higher though. Much cheaper in Vegas. I think a person really should visit both cities personally to decide, as they are just so different. It's very possible to like both cities a lot (I do), but they are just about as different as possible as two cities can be, in nearly every way.

Thanks so much to all who have taken the time to post, we have ruled out Portland due to weather and HCL.....we will most likely visit LV this summer and look at some real estate. We are interested in a condo or SFD about 2000 sq. ft. What area/s are best with these factors in mind and in this order: 1. safety 2. best deals with low HOA 3. easy access to strip, good entertainment 4. near water/ lake 5. near mountains

locals rarely go to the strip, unless they work there. In Summerlin, they go to SunCoast, Rampart, and Red Rock. Look at Summerlin Las Vegas - Summerlin Homes People in Summerlin have an LV address, so it is best to familiarize yourself with the 18 or so villages of Summerlin.

What??????????????????

Just about everyone I know goes to the Strip. And I've been here a real long time and know a lot of people.

In all the years I've been living here, I know of only two people that don't go to the Strip and haven't been there in about 20 years. And they don't patronize the local casinos either. They both live on Mount Charleston.

Give us a break and stop posting this type of misleading stuff...

The Las Vegas Strip is why 90% of the entire Las Vegas valley population moved here to begin with

Just like people in Oceanside rarely go to the beach, huh?

I haven't lived in Las Vegas, but I've lived in a lot of places besides Portland...all of them SUNNY! I don't find the winters to be hard here...until about April ;-). At the end of March, however, we schedule a trip to brighter climes to get our spirits up and ready for the GORGEOUS summers that are Portland. Portland summers have been described as "Nirvana" by a friend of mine. There are so many fun things to do in Portland, you won't ever get bored! We even have Cirque De Soleil in town right now (just trying to give LV a run for its money).

If you're thinking of moving in 2 years you should HIGHLY consider The Sheldon Cooperative. There's nothing like it on the west coast, although the idea has really caught on in the mid-west & east. It's an urban, age 55+ Co-op Community with bright, fun people who love the energy of the city. It's located right on the streetcar line in a very walkable neighborhood (NW Portland). It will be highly sustainable and completed in about 2 years. Several years ago a bunch of friends got together to create this concept because they were disapointed with the options for "retirement communities". This is VERY different.

Check it out at The Sheldon Cooperative - Community, Security, Home (http://www.thesheldoncooperative.com/ - broken link). You can also join our facebook fan page where we'll keep you up to date on the project and also what else is going on in Portland. Maybe it will give you some help in your decision-making.

Portland is really progressive and community minded. It is also very environmentally friendly, with plenty of recreation areas. If those things interest you, I'd come here. I only just got here and am loving it. Apparently, they call it "the Portland Flow"...Things just seem to fit together when you get here!

Well thanks for your info on the wonderful city of Portland, but if you read the posts (in particular #14 by the original poster) they ruled out Portland because of the weather issue, back in April.

Looking over the OP's posting history, they are relocating to Albuquerque.

Come on down and visit us sometime and have some fun on the Las Vegas Strip!

Pass the grain of salt. The coop form can be one of the most intrusive of all ownership forms. And from the carefully vague way in which the Shelton Cooperative deals with ownership etc I would count my fingers at all times.

The coop has really never caught on anywhere other than NYC where it is reasonably common. But it has a very different set of parameters from other ownership forms.

Note that a development filled with 55 to 60 year olds will be filled with 65 to 70 yos in 10 years and 75 to 80 yos in 20. Things change a lot over that span.
