Just got a great deal on a rental car at Thrifty for 14 days - then I looked at the fees/taxes. What a country!

Customer Facility Charge ($3.75 per day) $52.50
RENTAL TAX (12%) $30.89

Vehicle License Fee ($1.60 per day) $22.40
Total Estimated Mandatory Charges $309.17
Estimated Grand Total $309.17

Phoenix is even higher! But seriously $11 a day for the car is nothing

You can try renting from a non-airport location to avoid some of the fees but they tend to have a smaller selection and sometimes the base price itself is a little higher.

We experienced a similar "carjacking" recently on our March visit. The supposed $20/day rental became more than double that after all the fees were added. Criminal.

You are probably one of those who think that government services should be free.

I travel extensively in my job, rental car taxes are high everywhere, a minimum of 30% of the stated charge in most places. It is easier for local people and politicians to vote for taxes that effect (mostly) tourists and/or out of area visitors.

Cities with new baseball or football stadiums are the worst.

I have a rule about travel:
Air fares: Add 20% to the ticket price for "fees" so a $400 ticket is really $440 (security fee, baggage fee, amenities fee)
Hotels: Add 15% to the daily room charge (mostly taxes)
Rental cars: Usually I double the quote.

Well you have to consider that when tourist are here they need police, fire and EMS services the same as those of us who live here. When somebody from St Louis has chest pains at the Wynn, they don't call the EMS and fire department in St. Louis. It is our EMS service that goes to Wynn and takes them to UMC. So while I don't think they should be gouged, tourist should pay a little bit for the services that are provided for them. And if I go to St. Louis to see that big arch thingy there, I would expect to pay likewise.
