Hi!

I have been lurking here for a while. I am going to move to Las Vegas this summer to attend UNLV's law school. Unfortunately this means I will be relying on loans to finance my living expenses, and I will be on a tight budget. I want to spend as little as possible in order to be as best prepared for unexpected expenses as is possible.

Because of this, I am at a bit of a dead end in my apartment search. While I orginally wanted to live in Henderson, the apartments there that I would be able to afford are rated ****-poor on apartment ratings.

The two places right now that I am most interested in are Sunset Pointe and Oasis Place. Sunset Pointe is on East Sunset Road, and Oasis Place is on Sierra Vista Drive.

I have read tons of bad things about Sierra Vista Drive on this forum. But I looked at the crime-tracker, and there has only been 90 crimes there in the last 60 days. That is a lot, obviously, but not as much as many other areas I have seen in the crime tracker around Las Vegas.

Also, I looked at the street on google street view, and it looked relatively normal to me.

So how bad is it?

Sierra Vista is still in a shady area but the new Police sub-station in the corner of Sierra Vista and Swenson probably improved things a bit. There used to be many senior apts there, I don't know how it is now. There are many rentals in the area in front of the main entrance at UNLV, all within walking distance to the university, goodluck.

Off and On the Vegas Strip

If it's only those 2 complexes, pick Sunset Pointe. Sierra Vista is still one of the worst places even with a new police substation.

The answer is not just no, but HE** NO!

I worked a block over from there for seven years. I went from car to office back to car about six times a day, or more. Every time I was outside I saw the cops putting cuffs on someone. I watched drug deals going down everyday. I watched all kinds of crime and weird goings on at the Boulevard Mall all the time. We had cars broken into often, and they stole my license plate. I can't tell you how many murders there were in that area during those seven years, but it seemed like ever day. Was I ever personally worried during the day? NO I wasn't. But I wouldn't have wanted to be there at night. It's not just a matter of staying safe because you probably will. It's a matter of what it does to you personally to see that everyday where you live, and to lie awake at night worrying that every sound that might be someone trying to break in and rob and/or kill you. Just ain't worth what little you might save. Life's too short...

Okay, thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice of people who have speant some time living in Vegas!!

I am trying to focus on other places now, and I have a #1 choice in an area of Henderson that looks great, but I want some other options incase they don't have anything available.

How is the area at East Sunset Road next to Sunset Park below the airport? I have heard mixed things.

Generally speaking, anything east of the Strip is not too good. But after you've lived here a while you will be able to pick the good locations though.

You might look around E. Flamingo between Eastern and Pecos, particularly the apts at Flamingo and Hildebrand. There might be something in that area that would suit your needs. I'd say look at the whole area between Eastern to Pecos, and Viking to Harmon. That is actually the best located area of town. I don't know if it has deteriorated since I lived in a house on Rochelle at Hildebrand.

I would suggest renting a room in las vegas you can get used to the areas pay rent as low as $350 monthly all util paid and then see where you want to go from there and save some money. I rent out 2 rooms in my pool home for $395.00 util paid direct tv ,pool everything I have nothing open now but i rent month to month. Alot of people rent rooms while they are in transition its great!!

i have been living on Sierra Vista for a year.
i've read comments on apartment reviews that were years old.
they all say it's a bad street to live on,with drugs and prostitutes.
i've never seen any street walkers or outside drug dealing.
maybe the police station cleaned up the street.
if you live on the street, west of the police station is the better part of the street.
