Hi All! I havn't been on here for quite some time. In fact, the last time I was on here, I think I was getting opinions on going back to school at my old age...LOL. Now, I am in college going back for my nursing degree and I am well on my way I am proud to say! My GPA is 3.73 right now and I couldn't be happier with how things are going with the exception that I am extremely busy and don't get a chance to come here....

My family would like to go camping for a few days - pitch a tent, the whole nine yards. I love to fish, my husband likes to hike, so something with both activities would be fantastic - not too far from Vegas would be great.

Any suggestions from the pros??

Thanks!
Ally

On this map click on numbers 6 and 7, Eagle Valley and Echo Canyon: NDOW - Where to Fish - Southern NV Angler Info Guides

More info on fishing in Nevada. I like Cave Lake up at Ely, and I've never fished in the Great Basin NP, but I'm sure you can. Some of the best hiking in Nevada there: NDOW - Where to Fish

There are a lot of nice places in Southern Utah also. Some are fairly near St. George. For hiking and Fishing look for the higher elevations like Najavo Lake. You can get like a one day or three day license: Southern Utah Fishing Waters

Eagle Valley is one of my favorite camping/fishing spots and it's only about 3 hours away. The campground up there is immaculate and the park rangers really do a good job of keeping the place up. They have clean hot water showers at the campground too. You can also rent a little fishing boat from Big Fish Boat rentals which can be fun. We always have better luck fishing from the boat. I've heard Eagle Valley fills up in the summer, but I usually take a Friday off and we go up then and it hasn't been a problem. Eagle Valley does get pretty warm in the middle of summer tho, in mid July it'll be 90 degrees during the day there.

I've only been to Cave Lake twice and I haven't stayed at their campground (full both times, ended up at the KOA), but I really like that area. There is quite a few lakes up in that area and there are some sights to see (coal ovens, great basin NP, etc.) along with being close to Ely makes it easy to pickup supplies you forgot or just grab a bite in town. Cave Lake is cooler than Eagle Valley and I would definitely recommend going up there if it is in the middle of summer, but if you want to stay in the campground near the lake, get there early on Friday!

Either place is a great escape from the heat of Las Vegas.

Camped at Cave Lake in October one time when the temp dropped to 27º at night. But as it cools off the big brown trouts come in close to shore. State record was recorded there I hear. Lot of hunting at that time of year too ...deers and elks.
