hi,
Sorry wasn't sure where else to post this. If I wanted to change my legally last name, does anyone know how long the process is? I'm a US citizen, male, not sure if that matters. I've heard its a long process and expensive, but wasn't sure.

thanks.

Well, it depends on which state you live in. But I believe you need a file a name change petition in court. The reason being that you must have a court order to change your name on a birth certificate.

I can see this being a lengthy process due to all the stuff you need to update: Social Security Card, Drivers License, Passport, IRS, Voter Registration, Credit Cards, Health Care, etc...

Depends on the state. Go to the courthouse and ask.

Some states only require that you change everything, sign a declaration that it is not for illegal motives, and use the new name consistantly.

If you want it legally done - reflected on SS card and driver's license, you must go through either marriage (at the time of filing the marriage papers you can change the name) or a court. Each state varies. I had to fill out all the paperwork, paid a hefty filing fee of $500 or so, and had to appear in front of a judge. The judge won't really care what you want to change your name to as long as you have your reasons. It's the hefty payment that p'ed me off.
