We have an International Student here on an F1. Looking into getting OPT while she attends college. It is true that if she uses the OPT while attending college, she cannot continue to do so after graduation. Also, what are the proper steps to take to get a green card for someone who, by the time they are done their schooling has been in the US for more than 3 years between her old J1 and the new F1?
The OPT lasts 12 months and cannot be extended. I don't know if you can start the OPT during school.
J1 and F1 visas are not dual-intent, in other words, none of that time counts toward getting a Green Card, and there is no path for J1 or F1 visa holders to become LPR's. She needs a H1-b work visa (or a family-based visa). After 2 years on a H1 visa, she can ask her employer to petition for a Green Card for her. She cannot petition for one herself.
There are some changes concerning OPT - you may want to read up on the details.
