he will come here on F1 visa for Ph.D. It will take close to 5 years nowadays to finish his Ph.D. program. But he will need to maintain his immigration status. After Ph.D. he will get 27 months OPT period where he can work as a Post Doc. Then if he gets job in a company on H-1B visa or in a University, chances are that he will get Green Card on his own in 12 years under EB-2 category and you dont even have to sponsor him.
