Hi,

I am moving to California on a DV-lottery GC immigrant visa, from the UK.
For the first few months while unemployed, I would like to get private healthcare insurance, paid out of pocket by myself.
If I google this, most results seem like some dodgy websites selling scam.
So, what are the bigger reputable health insurance companies over there, who are also selling short term coverage that is also available for new immigrants too?
How much would that cost? (please don't pre-judge the price for me, I want to do that myself.)

regards,

A quick google showed this one amongst others which is covered by Lloyds which is a highly reputable insurance company.

Health Insurance for Immigrants

I'll warn you, though, that private health insurance is VERY expensive in the US. Bear in mind too (re your comment about it being "short term") that even when you get a job which offers it as part of the employment package, it doesn't kick in immediately and in many cases you have to be employed for a year before you're eligible. The NHS looks very good when you don't have it any more! Good luck with the search.

Thanks for the link. This website looks less sophisticated than my own personal website. This is what I meant by scam-suspicious google results.

Thanks. They say they pay for surgical treatments up to $6900. One surgery can be 100k+. How does this help anyone?

I think the fact that they're backed by Lloyds of London is rather more relevant than the fact that the website doesn't match up to yours.

We got Blue Cross Blue Shield, they are one of the largest US insurers and very good. My husband and I never used it thankfully, but the kids did to catch up on vaccinations and have well-checks and it was all paid for, not even a co-pay.

We got their short term stuff right away, which goes into effect the day your check is postmarked, so you can get it the day you arrive, and lasts 30-180 days. That gives you enough time to fil in (and possibly get the physical) for their normal insurance, or find an employer with health insurance.

When i take vacations to the USA i always use Blue Cross Blue Shield, never had to make a claim yet but they are a large company thats reputable..
Out of pocket expenses you dont want to go down that street as the hospital room alone could cost you $8000-$12000 per day.
