question..if an european father got his certificate of naturalisation,is his child under 18 automatically citizen?he does not really want his child from first marriage become american citizen.or he is citizen only when he gets his american passeport or certificate. As us citizen, child can leave this country only with us passeport....can he remain with european passport, travel back and forth and green card?
If the father becomes a US citizen after the child's birth, the child is not automatically a US citizen too. It is quite easy to get the child citizenship, but it needs to be applied for.
good that he is not automatically citizen, father does not want to apply for it...if you have dual citizenship, you ahve to travel all the time with the american pass

Why doesn't he want to sponsor his child from his first marriage? That sounds pretty callous.
Does the child have a green card now? If so, he can keep his European passport and travel back and forth with that. He can't stay out of the country for more than six months but he can travel like anyone else.
If he wants to become a citizen he would have to wait until he's had his green card for 5 years (3 years if his parent got his green card through marriage to a US citizen) and then apply for naturalization. He will not become a citizen until he has gone through the same process as his dad and received his certificate.

Actually it's a year but a red flag will be raised if you take frequent extended absences of several months in every year and you may even be questioned if you make just one extended trip of more than six months. Any absence of over a year and you have to file for a re-entry permit.

Yeah, you're right. I'm pretty sure the max used to be six months but I could be wrong.

If it was more than 40 years ago when I got a GC you may be correct!
