Its around $680 now to file for citizenship if you have a GC.

The main practical difference is being able to vote. GC holders: Plenty of taxation but no representation.

This a sticky subject and as a former Green Card holder (now citizen) do feel that any person that breaks the law in trying to enter the US is NOT ALLOWED CITIZENSHIP but only a Green Card for residency under specific circumstances permitting.

I had to follow a clean Police record when I applied from Canada...same should apply to any one else regardless of what country they are from......break any US law trying to get here you are SOL.

On the down side, if you get citizenship you are forced to pay US taxes for life even if you move out

No. You have to get green card status first. You can only apply for citizenship once you've had the green card status for five years (three years if you're married to a U.S. citizen).

.
It cost me more than that to get my green card (factoring in consulate interview fee, cost of required medicals, plus USCIS immigrant fee; and ignoring other expenses that not everyone may have such as cost of travel to the sole consulate per country that handles immigrant visas).

I think they meant that the process involved in getting your green card in the first place is more effort and expense, than the citizenship process is ( assuming you already have a green card). I would agree with that assessment.

One more benefit of the citizenship is access to more jobs, such as federal jobs, as majority of them require U.S. Citizenship.

Break some certain US laws or commit a bigger crime and the US will deport you, unless you are a citizen.

I see.

Mine cost 680 - so I'll consider it a bargain!
