Me (Irish) and my husband (USA):
First, he emigrated to live with me and marry me in Ireland. The reasons were mainly:
- It was easier and quicker for him to move (less immigration hassle) than me.
- He was in a bad job, was renting and wanted a change, I had a career and friends and owned an apartment.
- We wanted kids, and Ireland has 26 weeks paid plus 16 weeks unpaid maternity leave.
A few years later, we decided to move to the USA. The main reasons were:
- Husband is a Southern gent and could never quite settle in liberal Ireland.
- We had kids and wanted to be near family; neither of us had family in Ireland, but husband had a sister and brother in the town we now live in.
- The Southern US is far more family friendly and closer to our political and religious outlook than Ireland.
- We could buy a 4 bedroom house for half the price of our one bedroom apartment in Dublin.
We were both transferred by our company once it was merged with a US company. We also figured this would give our daughter a broader range of opportunities and be a good life experience.
For me ( moving from the Netherlands to Australia):
1) A change.
2) I will never ever be able to buy a detached property in the Netherlands a it's like legoland here and very very expensive.
3)The nature and space, the Netherlands is to overpopulated.
4) The Netherlands is turning very conservative, it used to be a unique and liberal country..not anymore.
5) The weather. It's sooo grey and depressing.
Me from US to UK to marry a Scot.
Dh had a career he loved, I just had a job.
I rented an apartment, dh owned a house.
Dh would never in a million years live in the US.
I was quite keen to live in Scotland.
Our kids were all grown so that didn't complicate anything.

Similar reasons to ourselves Iceshots not the merging US companies bit...but offering our daughters a wider range of experiences and opportunities..and also for ourselves when we get older...to have the options available for us when we retire
Keep your reasons coming folks...Im really curious

I can relate to a few of your comments Katie ...we are looking for a change, buying a better house for our money, and escaping this scottish weather.

The bluest set of eyes there are:>) Being able to turn a hobby into a career at an age when in Europe you start looking over your shoulder.
