MOD NOTE: This thread was started in 2011

About a week ago I was in Forman Mills over by the Whitehall Mall, and I noticed some of the employees at the cash registers had Haitian/French names on their nametags. Some of the customers in there were also speaking what sounded like French Creole. Do a lot of Haitians live up that way?

PS. I'm not Haitian, I was just curious, as I didn't know there was any sort of Haitian population in the Lehigh Valley.

I haven't seen or heard of any Haitian communities in the Lehigh, even if it's smaller. I know that there are some Trinidadians and Jamaicans that live there though.

There are a few Haitians living in Allentown, Easton, and Bethlehem. In fact there’s a Haitian church in Allentown. If you are interested the address is 3436 Winchester Road Allentown, PA 18104. They worship on Saturdays.

Not a lot, but you would expect to find some representatives from most immigrant groups in retail.

Contact: Steven Camarota, (202) 466-8185, sac@cis.org

The last Census Bureau data (2008) indicates there are 546,000 Haitian immigrants in the United States. That is up from 408,000 in 2000 and 218,000 in 1990. Of the 546,000 foreign-born Haitians in the United States, 48 percent are naturalized U.S. citizens; this compares to 43 percent for the overall foreign-born population. Our best estimate is that there are 75,000 to 125,000 illegal Haitian immigrants in the country. In 2000, the INS estimated there were 76,000 illegal Haitian immigrants.

I want to contact Haitians in the valley. I work with an orphanage in Port au Prince and would like to make friends here with Haitians. Any suggestions as to how I could find them?
