When are you moving? By the end of the month
Where are you coming from? Hometown is Kennett Square, PA; Recent grad of Penn State
Why are you moving? New job
Where will you be working? Downtown Allentown - 9th and Hamilton Have you been here yet? Familiar with the overall area, but usually just passing through to Jersey or going to Dorney Park

Will you buy or rent? Rent
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? No more than 800, ideally
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? Probably walk-up

Are you married or single? Do you have children? Single
Do you have pets? No
Do you want or need a yard? Not necessary - patio or deck for grilling would be nice.
Are you keeping a car? Yes definitely, required for job. Nearby, safe parking is important.
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Somewhere in-between

Phillies or Mets? Phillies.

If anyone is familiar with West Chester, PA, that is my idea of an ideal place to live. Small city, walkable but still plenty of parking, plenty of bars and restaurants. West Chester U is located there, so it is a college town and it feels similar to State College (where I spent 4.5 years), but with a little more of a young professional feel.

I was in what I believe to be downtown Bethlehem a few years ago on a school trip - I remember eating at Bethlehem Brew Works - that neighborhood seemed pretty cool. I know that Lehigh U is located nearby as well - not sure if that gives the town the youthful college feel I'm looking for.

Essentially, I'm looking for a good place to transition from college life to young professional life.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I know both Bethlehem and West Chester pretty well having lived in Downingtown and Garnet Valley area for 10 years and up here for 13. Bethlehem is indeed the closest you will find to a WC feel up this way. The area that you visited, near the Brew Works, is my favorite area of town. Moravian college is within walking distance and Lehigh is just across the river, so quite a few college students hang out in the downtown area. There are actually 6 colleges in the Lehigh Valley, not including the PSU branch campus in Center Valley or our two Community Colleges.

Check out the sticky at the top for suggestions of on-line rental info, but I would go for historic Bethlehem. Oh, another choice that may be more affordable is Emmaus. Very commutable to Allentown. My older kids, that are your age, have friends that couldn't quite afford Bethlehem but could afford Emmaus. It has coffee shops, restaurants and a nice small town feel. Check out Blind Willow Book Shop. It's owned by some nice young guys your age.
