Hi everyone! Thanks in advance to anyone who answers my ???s...

My husband is a physician who is contemplating a position at Lehigh Valley Hospital. He grew up in Macungie & graduated from Emmaus High School. His parents & sister still live there. They seem to be happy... I personally love living where we are right now - in Hershey. The job offer he received from Lehigh is for quite a bit more $$$ than what he makes now. There are more important things in life than how much you make at your job. I'm worried we won't have as good a quality of life in Lehigh Valley as we do here. I don't mean to sound ignorant. I would seriously have to love it in Macungie to move there. We aren't up there too often. His parents & sister more often than not visit us down in Hershey...

The real estate up in Macungie seems to be just a little less expensive than it is in Hershey. Many more homes for sale too. More house for our $$$ sounds good to me. Not many homes for sale here that are in our price range...

I am wondering if East Penn is a good school district. We have a 4 y/o & an almost 1 y/o. So I really want them to get the best education they can. The school district we live in now is excellent. I just want something comparable.

I am soooo torn about moving. It wouldn't be for another year or even year & a half. So maybe I'm stressing over nothing.

I have a lot of great friends who are SAHMs like me here. I will dearly miss them. I'm guessing I'll be able to find some Mommy groups in Macungie... Any recommendations for child-friendly neighborhoods would be great too!

Thanks for listening to me ramble...

Well Macungie is pretty much getting over developed. It's terrible for those of us who remember empty fields...and the home prices were even cheaper before an influx of New Yorker's drove the prices up! LOL.
But, to answer your question- East Penn is a really good school district. In this area, only Parkland S.D. is better.
I work. But, I belong to several groups (book clubs etc) and some of the members are SAHM's. I'd check out meetup.com for local groups.

Yes, my husband & I met in college (1995) & there were a lot more open fields in the area even then. Thanks for the info re: the school districts. I had read that Parkland was very good too. The group I am in now I found through meetup.com. Awesome site.

If you do a search on this site by school districts, you'll find all kinds of information and opinions. I live in Southern Lehigh school district. We chose it because we wanted a small school district, one where our kids would know their teachers and where I could get involved. We've found the schools to be very good and it was really easy for me to jump in, make friends and get involved. You can compare the schools on this site - Here's an East Penn and SoLeHi comparison Schooldigger.com comparison results

One tip I would give you is to move to a neighborhood where the houses are about the same age as your kids. That is, if you have real young kids, you would want a new neighborhood. If you have High School kids, you might want to move to my neighborhood - the houses are about 20 years old. When we moved here 13 years ago, my oldest child was going into 7th grade and she and her younger brother made friends with kids their age right away. We became good friends with their parents and do lots of things together.

Thanks! I never thought about moving into a neighborhood w/houses the same age as our children. Makes sense.

I live in Lower Macungie (moved here 3 years ago) and we love it! My kids were 7, 5 and 2 when we moved here, so we have been in the East Penn schools for 3 years and also the preschool world - can not say enough good things!

There are lots of transplants here, so making friends is very easy.

Any of the housing developments off of Sauerkraut Rd (Farmington Hills, Graymoor, Brandywine, Branywine II, Bauemont) are filled with young kids - our bus stop alone, has about 30 kids!

You did not mention your budget, but houses in my development are going for around $350 - $450K. I have quite a few neighbors who are physicians at Lehigh Valley.

You're welcome

This is such a strange thing to say. Was it a wagon train these dreaded New Yorkers came in on? I have to assume that the housing was planned and built first. Build it and they shall come. Along with them, they brought $$, which is helping the local economy.

Our budget would probably be $300-350,000. I'm just guessing now. Not sure how much we could get for our current home. I have seen the area that you're talking about. My SIL lives there. Very nice!

Posting here about Parkland. You asked in the other thread about commuting to LV Hospital from Parkland SD. As you can see from this map http://www.lehighvalleyfirsttimehome...oolDistMap.pdf Parts of Parkland are equally as close to the hospital as some parts of East Penn School district. Picture the hospital as being on that little tip of East Penn school district that touches Allentown school district.

Both are great school districts, but my personal preference would be for East Penn because it has actual small towns (Emmaus and Macungie) where community life happens. Parkland has lots of houses and wide open spaces, but no main streets. I've lived in an area very similar to Parkland and others similar to East Penn and I prefer the latter.
