It really depends on what you want from the area, and where you move.

If you are moving there as a retiree and want somewhere quiet to spend your "twilight years" there are some very lovely small towns in the region.

If you are moving there and expecting nightlife or culture, those opportunities are few and far between. You really have to know where to look.

Well, we have two small children (4 yrs. old & almost 1) so we aren't really into the nightlife! We want a safe place with good schools & activities for the kids. Macungie seems like it's very close to Philly & NYC too. We could go to either of those spots when the kids are a bit older for culture...

I visited Emmaus three times before I moved here. While visiting, we ate at several restaurants. Drove to where all the major shops are located. Took notes, visited Macungie and the surrounding area's before we decided upon Emmaus. I'm not going to say that Emmaus is better than Macungie, but it met our needs. It takes me 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 to get to my in-laws in Staten Island and about 1 1/2 or so to get to center city philly.

I would choose the Lehigh Valley over NEPA in your case, then. The schools seem to be much better, IMHO.

Oh, we were never looking into moving to NEPA... Another person on this thread just mentioned that they really didn't like living there & I wondered why. I have researched the schools in the Macungie/Emmaus area & they do look like they are very good!

east penn (macungie/emmaus) is very good, but parkland (right next to east penn) is just a little bit better(based on sat & pssa scores).

Thanks! It is nice to know we will have a couple of school districts to choose from (that are very good) when/if we move... When we moved to Hershey (there is only one really good district) we were really limited to a few neighborhoods b/c of the size of the "good" district.

East Penn and Parkland are both good but huge districts. We looked at East Penn too but their slight bump in scores was not worth it to us because we wanted smaller Middle and High Schools. I can't speak to the other small schools but SL offers everything that we were looking for. Parkland was too far North for us, so it was not in the picture.

Any help in clarifying this issue is much appreciated!
Oops! Just realized that I went off topic with the previous post! Crime-wise, the Lehigh Valley is no worse then most area's of it's size. More crime in the city, less in the small towns. No place is going to stay the same for years and years.

I'm glad you went off topic... Only b/c I am wondering how far north the Parkland SD is? I looked at Southern Lehigh too. Not many homes for sale in our price range. Is Parkland in Upper Macungie Township? How far of a commute would it be to get to Lehigh V. Hospital from that area? Thanks!
