I'm new to the area and need good booze for the holidays. Where is the best liquor store in the valley?

Aren't they all really similar?? We just go to the closest place. Are there different prices? Obviously, I can't answer this post, but now I'm curious too!

Liquor Prices are tightly controlled in PA, and there is no deviation in prices. Prices were very high compared to out West. Look at the list (743 pages) and see what is on sale and if you can live with it. Concentrate on sale prices.

If you are buying a large purchase you will probably save money by driving to Phillipsburg. Take I-78 East and cross the river, and take route 22 north.

Warren County
Bourbon Street
1217 Route 22 West
Phillipsburg, NJ 08865
Phone: 908-387-WINE (9463)
Hours of operation:
Mon. - Sat. 9am - 10pm
Sun. 9am - 8pm

It shares a parking lot with
Shop Rite -1207 Route 22
Home Depot - 1209 Route 22
McDonald's- 1209 Route 22
Bella Mia Pizza- 1219 Route 22

BLACK VELVET CANADIAN WHISKEY RESERVE 750 ML $12.99 in PA liquor stores. At Bourbon Street in Phillispburg it is $16.99 for 1750 ML.
But from November 28 to January 1st it is $9.99 for 750 ML in PA.

So if you are doing a sizeable purchase of whiskey it is worth the drive. But do your research first. You can't assume cheaper prices on everything.

It does not matter. They are all Government controlled. Even though I have leftist tendencies I support the free market in this case. It is long overdue. Shut down the State stores. There is no debate. The articles in local papers questioning this are laughable.

PA has little in way of large variety. The antiquated, prohibition gangsta laws make it difficult to purchase liquor/beer.I travel to phillipsburg & enjoy a large "choice" & competitive pricing & lower than State run outrageous prices in PA.
I Patronize & glady give my money to
Bourbon st New brunswick Ave,Phillipsburg,NJ.From my home outside of hellertown it's about 27 miles & worth evry bit of freedom to choose.
I,like you am fairly new to the area.I love it here, but these PA prohibition laws have got to GO!!!!!!

PA LCB is very aware of Bourbon Street prices, so they frequently put similar items on sale. Take a little time to shop online, and don't assume everything is cheaper in NJ.

Philosophically, many states in the East Coast require you to purchase hard liquor in state owned stores. The tight control of outlets where you can purchase beer, and the state monopoly on the sale of wine seems long ago outmoded. You should be able to buy a cheap bottle of wine at a grocery store, instead of making a special trip to a store with limited hours and having to chose from a limited group of wines that are on sale (translate: reasonably priced).

The stated purpose of the Liquor Control Board after prohibition was to comply with the law legalizing liquor sales, but to make it as difficult and as expensive as possible within the legal requirements. Now it is just a moneymaker for the state.

Paco,Thanks for the list of State owned/operated & controlled stores, useless for me as I alway's alway's purchase Wine & beer OUT OF STATE. My personal "BOYCOTT" will continue till PA comes into this century & abolishes it's prohibition & totalitarian laws for purchase of alcohol.Since I am a beer man I have a choice to purchase individual 6 packs & not be forced to buy a whole case of one brand.Individually purchased it's alway's cheaper in NJ>>>ALWAY'S. 32.00 for a case of heineken in in PA. NJ I have a choice of 4 six packs for the same amount of $$ or a bit more, but 4 different brands of beer.If I only want to purchase a 6 pack in PA I am forced to go to a Pizza shop or deli>> heineken 11.00 to 12.50.I encourage anyone who drinks to make your purchases in NJ till maybe, just maybe house bill # 11 passes & becomes law.I could have listed more in NJ however Bourbon St came to mind...Thanks for the info..

The list was for general use, for anyone new to the area.

You have hard core belief if you won't even buy beer in PA. With the price of gas you would have to buy an SUV full of beer to make the trip payoff.

Wegman's seems to do a thriving business in selling overpriced 6 packs. For anyone not aware of the business tactic, Wegman's applied for a restaurant and bar license for it's grocery stores. They were required to set up a special exit and a dining area. That way they are selling 6 packs (like any bar), but with the look and feel of a convenience store. As a multi billion dollar corporation, they have good lawyers, and have survived the lawsuits.

Possibly to strengthen their position they are converting the Allentown location so that it has a more traditional pub look, complete with bar stools and beer on tap.

I am not sure what the wineries in PA do to sell their own product. I've heard the rules are complex.

As I said earlier, I have no problem with selling hard liquor in a limited number of state owned locations. But I do think that selling bottles of table wines in grocery stores should be permitted.

At the very least, grocery stores should be able to sell "magnums" (1.5 liter) or box wines (1.5 liters and above).

I'd just as soon the beer stayed out of Wegmans. That store is always so darn busy it's hard to shop on Sundays. I understand that the buying beer only in a case, and at a stand alone location is a big deal to some people, but we just figure that's the way it is. Alcohol was sold in a separate store where I grew up in Delaware too, but I guess you could buy all kinds (beer, wine, liquor) all in one place. I moved out of state right after I turned the legal drinking age so I never much noticed it.
