28 yo single professional, relocating from Pittsburgh in July 2012. will work at Lehigh Valley Hospital- Cedar crest. Heard that there are not many "safe neighborhoods" in Allentown (please correct me if i am wrong). Any help in finding an apartment or townhouse in safe locality will be highly appreciated. Ready to drive 15-20 mins one way if that opens up better options. Thanks a lot and happy holidays.

The hospital is located quite a distance from Center City Allentown. An easy commute would be Emmaus, just down the road.

Some hospital folks live in Breinigsville. In Allentown, the section btw Chew and Parkway is popular with higher-income folks, including doctors.

To get oriented, the main part of Allentown basically goes from front and 1st near the river upto 31st street. Then Cedar Crest is parallel to 31st street. Allentown is safe and upscale to the west of 17th street (23rd street in some cases).

Madison at Cedar Glen is close enough to the hospital, that you can easily walk under the Interstate if your car is being repaired.
2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, 1100 sq feet $1059 - $1099

The Meadows are in Emmaus about 3 miles from the hospital.

The Lakes on Cedar Crest Blvd are probably the nicest apartments in Allentown. Roughly 2.5 miles down the Blvd to the hospital.

West End Theater district will be cheaper, but it is more of an option for someone who wants a more urban lifestyle and is bothered by the expense and relative sterility of the complexes. Clubs, bars, delis, sidewalk seating, experimental theater, but the homes are almost all Pre-WWII. The area is not known to be dangerous, but you are more likely to face some urban hassles like stealing things left in the yard.

You can probably rent a three bedroom 1 bathroom house with a garage for the same or less as some of the more high end complexes. You are straddling the area between the upscale west end, and the gritty and very dangerous neighborhoods to the east of 7th street.
