Bethlehem Township, Pa., officials tonight gave preliminary approval to two major developments along the Route 33 corridor.

Madison Farms on Freemansburg Avenue would include 837 homes and 140,000 square feet of commercial space.

The other project, William Penn Commons, calls for nearly 50,000 square feet of retail space along William Penn Highway.

The complex includes 570 apartments, 130 townhouses and 57 single-family homes.

The William Penn Commons complex is expected to include a 12-pump gas station and convenience store, a bank, a daycare and three other commercial buildings, developer’s attorney David Backenstoe said.

The development will have easy access to the Park & Ride and bus trip to NYC.

Rents are rather high near Lehigh considering the condition of most of the apartments. You can probably pay a mortgage for less money than the rents. I saw one house going for $850 per months where you could buy homes for less than $50K.

But assuming you are a student, most people don't want to be homeowners while they are college students, and/or their parents are not interested.

It can be a little dicey regarding security. Just exercise normal urban levels of caution, and you will be OK.

Thanks for posting. Any idea what school districts these 2 developments would serve? My guess is Bethlehem.

I would guess the same thing, but I don't know. Farmersville elementary is the only school there, and it is part of Bethlehem School District, but it already has over 500 students.
