While I wouldn't live in Bethlehem proper, this area is alot nicer then Newark. If you read this board a little bit you will see that it's full of people that are moving here from New Jersey and they are all worried about the commute once they move here but still work in New Jersey. It's funny to think that you would consider living in New Jersey but work here. The area around Bethlehem is the Lehigh Valley, put that in as a keyword for searching this BB and you'll get a good idea about what's up here.
The highest rated school systems within commuting distance are East Penn and Parkland. The closest very good, but smaller school systems to Bethlehem are Southern Lehigh and Saucon. Nazareth is also thought well of by some people here. You can compare all their stats on this site:
