While I wouldn't live in Bethlehem proper, this area is alot nicer then Newark. If you read this board a little bit you will see that it's full of people that are moving here from New Jersey and they are all worried about the commute once they move here but still work in New Jersey. It's funny to think that you would consider living in New Jersey but work here. The area around Bethlehem is the Lehigh Valley, put that in as a keyword for searching this BB and you'll get a good idea about what's up here.

The highest rated school systems within commuting distance are East Penn and Parkland. The closest very good, but smaller school systems to Bethlehem are Southern Lehigh and Saucon. Nazareth is also thought well of by some people here. You can compare all their stats on this site: Schools, High School, Public Schools, School District, Public High Schools - SchoolMatters You can even put in the schools where you are in NJ to compare - it's a nationwide site.

The public and middle schools are doing well. They are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) according to the Pennsylvania Department Of Education. The discrepancy comes when the children enter high school. Both Liberty and Freedom High School did not meet AYP status. After doing some research I discovered that it is mostly the Black and Hispanic students who are not meeting the AYP targets. Liberty has improved a little since last year but could do better. Freedom High School on the other hand is still struggling with it's Hispanic students according to the Pennsylvania Department Of Education. I plan to move into the Bethlehem area shortly. Being of Hispanic heritage I want my children to be in a diverse school district and Bethlehem provides that. My 3 children will be attending both elementary and middle school. I am not overly concerned about the school environment because my children's education starts at home and I am very involved with them. Here's the link to the Pennsylvania Department Of Education. Hope that helps.
