I just purchased a home in Nazareth and I need help with choosing utility companies. For electricity I was referred to Met Ed, for TV-internet-phone I was referred to RCN, for oil I was sent to Fritch, and for trash pick up I was told to use Herceg.

Are these the companies to use? Or are there any better ones to use?

Any help will be appreciated!

I'm surprised you have a choice for electricity. We've been happy with PP&L, especially after we put in solar panels! We can't get RCN where I am and use Service Electric. We only have internet with them now. No idea about Fritch. We use a local trash company and in the last few years, the competition for trash pick-up has increased quite a bit. You might want to make sure that Herceg is the best deal. All the companies around us now offer a free wheeled trash can and some flexibility regarding one or two pick ups a week with one including curb side recycling.

Electric: as TBT mentioned, I think you don't have a choice between Met Ed or PPL. They are the electricity producers. However, once you have electricity you can choose your supplier at papowerswitch.com (I have used maybe 3 to 4 of them and the service is all the same, they just have different rate structures).

Internet/ Phone/ TV: I think RCN is the best in the area, but you may/ may not have a choice (go to their websites and enter the house address). If you do, I'd go with RCN.

Oil: Don't know, but we use Pipeline Petroleum for propane. A bunch of us in the neighborhood teamed up and signed up at the same time and Pipeline was the cheapest provider, but there are comparison sites out there (e.g. fuelwonk.com).

Trash: Herceg is fine, but in my area they only did recycling every 2 weeks, so we switched to Republic (recycle and trash weekly, free high quality trash bin, pretty good iPhone app). There is also Waste Management, just go with the cheapest and one that has weekly trash and recycling.

If that is not clear, our last electric bill was $137.09 for distribution and $196.31 for generation. In PA you can choose your company for generation, but not for distribution. In reality that big price differences are if you choose a green company which will raise your electric rate, but you can support the environmental cause. If you don't opt for a green company, the other ones are fairly competitive. In past years, short term contracts have resulted in some massive spikes in rates that will more than burn up the money you saved in past months.

RCN is pretty superior internet speeds because RCN is an integrated internet and cable TV company. Service Electric is a cable TV company that sources out internet to PenTelData. But keep in mind that RCN was just sold, and possibly may be due for price increases. Never use the e-mail address provided by the cable company, as it makes it more difficult to switch providers.
