When are you moving? September
Where are you coming from? Wilkes-Barre, PA
Why are you moving? Job
Where will you be working? Not sure yet. Easton, Coopersburg, and Nazareth are all possible
Have you been here yet? I've been a tourist there multiple times, especially in the moravian college area and north side downtown

Will you buy or rent? Prefer to buy but would consider renting for a year first
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend? House or townhouse, 150-200k
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? House or townhouse, 1000-1500/month
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? WALK UP

Are you married or single? Do you have children? Married. Not yet.
Do you prefer public or private schools? PUBLIC
Do you have pets? 50# dog
Do you want or need a yard? YES
Are you keeping a car? YES 2 CARS
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? I like bustle and the ability to walk downtown (ideally, would be okay within a few miles of downtown). I used to live in West Philly and liked the area. I prefer not to live right near the drunken college kids. Right now I live in rural suburbs and do not prefer that option.

What do you want to be closest to? Safe areas to walk my dog, restaurants, gym, I'd like to be commutable to work but doesn't need to be too close

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? I want to feel safe walking my dog after dinner, so not a very poor or gang-ridden area. Living near other young professionals would be ideal.

From what I've read, I think that I'd prefer being closer to Moravian than Lehigh. I'd like some input on neighborhoods. There are some inexpensive townhouses right near downtown that look a bit rundown but otherwise manageable. Is that area safe? Where should I definitely avoid?

I think you are on the right track looking at the townhomes near Moravian. You can pretty much walk to anywhere and the prices are reasonable. It's also considered a safe area. Once you have a school age child, you can decide to move again, or stay put.
