Hi Everyone,

I'll be moving to Bethlehem this fall as an incoming graduate student. In May I visited an apartment that is currently rented by another grad student in my program. Upon meeting the landlords (who are awesome), and seeing that the place is well up-kept and within my budget, I signed the lease.

After chatting with their current tenant prior to signing (he is leaving because he's moving in with friends), I was under the impression that while parts of South Bethlehem can be a bit rough, the location of this apartment was safe since he hadn't had any issues. The location of the apartment is near the intersection of E 6th, Buchanan and Thomas streets.

However, since then I've read mixed reviews about the area online and have realized that in the past there have been some muggings (some at gunpoint), and more recently several burglaries of Lehigh students and their homes. I was wondering if anyone here could comment on whether or not this area of the Southside is indeed safe, or if there are certain precautions I'll need to take living there. Obviously I won't be walking around alone at night, but perhaps there are other steps I can take to stay safe (if my concerns are even warranted). I come from a small city that has a small homeless and drug problem, but crimes such as burglaries of residences and muggings are largely unheard of in my neighborhood.

Thank you all for any insight.

Its not that bad but not that great either.I don't live there but I live close and heard from co workers who did live there about shootings, fights, and other stuff. They had a street gang from there involved in all sorts of crime prosecuted this year in the news.I would say if you do decide to move there use your judgement and be aware.
