Hello everyone,

My job is sending me to work in Allentown sometime within the next month and a half. I have been trying to find a place to live but after reading a lot of forums about the area, I still don't know what areas are safe and which aren't. I am moving from Chicago and am a single 25 year old male. I am looking for an area that caters to crowd around my age that isn't too dangerous and has reasonable rent (less than $1000). I've seen places such as Versailles on eighth but have heard bad things about the location. I would love te hear back from people who live there or have lived there. Any advice would be appreciated!

If I were a 25 year old single guy, I'd live in Bethlehem. Maybe walking distance to some of the bars/ restaurants.

Are you planning on using public transportation? I would also highly suggest Bethlehem. My kids are around your age and would tell you the same!

I heard about Bethlehem but have been trouble finding a nice apartment for under that price range. Do any of you know of some good complexes similar to the Versailles. A lot of what I have found has been really old and relatively dirty apartments. I plan on driving to downtown Allentown because it is my understanding that there is really no good public transportation in the area.

Are there certain parts of Bethlehem I should steer clear from? Should I mainly stick north of the river and east of 378?

I grew up in Bethlehem and it is a very nice town. But downtown has become rather upscale and most of the restaurants and bars are expensive. Your budget is modest, so I would recommend you consider privately renting in the West End Theatre District in Allentown.

The crime rate is considerably lower than center city Allentown, it is much closer to work, and public transit may be a reasonable option. There are bars and clubs that cater to people your age, and you get some spillover from Muhlenberg College.

But there are no apartment buildings in that area, so you have to look for private landlords. Type West End Theatre District Allentown into search engine and you will find several options under $900.

You can ride the #107, #209 or #218 bus to work, so you don't have to worry about your car.

Versailles is one of the new upscale apartment buildings where $1000 will get you a studio. But they are sure to charge for parking. But you are still next door to the Salvation Army, and you can buy crack within two blocks of there. This huge effort to gentrify downtown Allentown with a handful of expensive apartment still must contend with 50,000 people within a mile of Center city, an area that is the most violent in the Valley.
