Hello everybody,

My husband has been working in Hazleton since March, and we will be moving out to PA once our home sells. One of the areas we are looking at is the Northwestern Lehigh School District - the schools seem to have the right fit of smaller size and decent test scores that works for our family. One concern we have is that I will be going back to school and my sons (3rd & 6th graders) will need to have activities to keep them positively occupied in the summer. Can anyone tell me what types of summer activities are available in this area?

Thanks!

If they are able to get there, down in Trexlertown the velodrome has free kids programs that are really cool:

Thank you so much for those suggestions, Navida and Karen_S. Those both look like the kinds of things my boys would enjoy doing, and I don't think I could have found them very easily on my own. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you, toobusytoday! I hope the previous homeowners are able to quickly feel at home in Omaha. It really is a great place to live, but I'm feeling very ready to make the move out to PA . . . now we just need to find someone who wants to buy our house! Anyone else out there needing to move our way? We have a great home in a great neighborhood!

We are still trying to decide between Northwestern Lehigh Valley and the Bloomsburg area. I like the idea of being a little closer to Philadelphia, but I am also very impressed with the community feeling in Bloomsburg. How easy is it to feel a part of things in the Northwestern Lehigh school district?

Hello,In my opinion, NW Lehigh is a very welcoming community. We don't really know our neighbors well because everyone has a few acres. People on my road wave when they recognize you, even if they don't know you. The schools are great - I see the same parents at school/sports functions, etc. and have been able to make pretty many friends. (I'm a transplant from the city - here for 11 years now)As far as the school, it seems that everyone knows everyone else and the kids do not get lost in the shuffle (at least mine haven't). I am a substitute teacher in several districts in this area and I won't consider moving out until my kids are done with school! The Penn State Lehigh Valley Campus used to run summer activities for kids. I'm not sure if they will still operate anything in the area since they moved, but you may want to check later in the year.Good Luck with everything!

There is a kid up there that teaches banjo lessons. That area is well known for people just like this.

Thank you for your input, Navida and Lifetime Local! It's nice to know we have some good options. We have been really happy with our children's education here in Omaha, so I have been a little reluctant to give that up, but it's good to hear positive comments about the schools in Northwestern Lehigh. I know they have also gotten some great reviews on greatschools.org. And I'm hopeful that if we end up in Northwestern Lehigh that it won't take too long to feel like we belong there.

You might want to look at SchoolMatters (http://www.schoolmatters.com/ - broken link) and Schools in Northwestern Lehigh School District, New Tripoli, PA - SchoolDigger.com Great schools is more of subjective website then a data driven one.
