When I lived in PA, I switched from Dr. Shay who lowered my dose and I became horribly sick (undermedicated, hypothyroid patients are not happy, healthy people!). I found a Dr. Frederick Burton in Wynnewood, PA. He's an M.D. but also practices a more integrative approach. He stays super busy and doesn't rely just on bloodwork for your thyroid. He goes by body temp and physical symptoms and also reflexes. Very interesting approach. But, he adjusted my levels but switched me to Nature-Throid and within a few weeks I lost weight and felt better....not 100% like my younger years. I'm not sure since being diagnosed as hypothyroid that I've ever felt 100% great unfortunately. But, Dr. Burton's approach literally lifted me out of a lethargic, depressive state and made me functional, able to smile and laugh and lost the weight I gained to boot!

I now live in the Charlotte, NC area and have found a family doctor to still prescribe my Nature-Throid but I haven't found anyone like Dr. Burton in PA (M.D./Integrative) that will file insurance. All the Integrative doctor's that truly practice an integrative approach want payment up front and it's up to the patient to try and get reimbursed. But, these doctors will spend at a minimum of 60 minutes with you versus the typical 8-10 min. doctor visit. So if you can afford it, it's well worth it. I found these doctor's by just doing Google searches. It takes a bit of time but if you want Armour and a doctor that will consider prescribing it properly then it's worth the effort to search for one. Unfortunately, I just can't afford a $200-$300 first visit bill right now.

Butterfly - What doctor do you go to? I have been searching and searching for someone who will prescribe Nature-Throid, Westhroid, Armour, any NDT...

I am too loking for a doctor in Harrisonburg area. You would think if you call the pharmacy and ask if they have doctors that are prescribing this through their pharmacy, they would tell you. That would not be a HIPPA violation if they are not telling you what patients are getting it. All I want to know is what doctors are giving it!

Now please keep in mind when I started this topic I was living in PA, I am now in NC outside of the Charlotte area. I now go to the group in Concord, NC that is affiliated with CMC-NE.. It's Northeast Integrative and Internal Medicine, they have 2 doctor's in that group that will prescribe Armour (and other natural thyroid meds). They will also discuss supplements and they have massage therapists and an acupuncturist on staff.

I no longer live in PA but the doctor I found that was alternative/holistic was a Dr. Frederick Burton in Wynnewood, PA. He actually prescribed for me Nature-Throid (it's like Armour). I wasn't doing well with Armour back when they re-formulated it in 2009 so he put me on Nature-Throid and a combo of an Iodine supplement. I felt better and lost weight. I'm not sure how far Harrisburg is from Wynnewood (which is outside of Philly) but he was all I could find when I lived there.

Also, here in NC some of the more home town pharmacists will discuss doctor's with you....I'm not sure about the big chain drugstores, they may be more hesitant to refer or give out doctor's names.
