Hello! I know this is a long shot, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. Is anyone aware of any language immersion schools in the area? I'd like our pre-schooler to begin learning a 2nd language. She'll be starting kindergarten this fall. I've looked online and haven't seen anything, but perhaps my searches weren't good ones. I'm moving to the area soon, so I can't ask neighbors.

Thanks.

One of the three elementary schools in my school district, Southern Lehigh, has Spanish immersion starting in first grade. Liberty Bell Elementary It's quite popular.

If you are interested in independent schools, The Swain School (PreSchool through 8th grade) offers many educational opportunities, including Spanish class twice a week beginning in Kindergarten. The teacher is amazing, the program is immersion style, and the kids LOVE her!

Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, PA offers Spanish every day beginning in PreKindergarten. Additionally, they will begin a Spanish Immersion Program beginning in Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. It's a fabulous school with a reputation for academic excellence!

I noticed that. How is Moravian (and Swain, if you know) compared to the better public schools?

As private schools Moravian and Swain are able to accept the students they choose so you won't have kids there with special needs. Both have very good reputations for academics but they should, they cost more than the local community colleges: Moravian Academy ~ Tuition and Financial Aid

Even compared to the best area public schools Moravian has a leg up. The curriculum is always one year ahead compared to what the PA public schools are studying. As an independent school they have more autonomy and freedom. 100% of MA students graduate from the US and move on to college. It's a special place! And now with the addition of the Spanish Immersion program, it really has a lot to offer.

greenplum, Why do you say that the curriculum is always a year ahead at Moravian? Unless you can directly compare the grades in each of the area schools, I don't think you can really say that. Again, I'm not knocking Moravian (or Swain) but I don't think that you can compare small private schools that pick and choose their students with publics.

I think both Moravian and Swain are very good schools but many of move to the areas that we do because we believe that our public schools are very good. In Southern Lehigh School district over 90% of the families choose to send their kids to public schools because we believe that they do a great job of educating our children. Why pay thousands and thousands in taxes and than pay another $15,000 + on top of that for private school?

Reality is that most of the kids at Moravian are in homes in the Bethlehem Area or Easton Areas School District.

ICO Mexico in Oaxaca City (OC) is a good place for Spanish Immersion. OC is where President Obama sent his daughter on a trip. The states of Oaxaca and Yucatan have the highest percentage of people of indigenous origin in Mexico.
