Part of the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition is celebrating Fastnacht day on February 17th, shrove Tuesday by eating fastnacht's, a yummy doughnut made with potato dough. This article has a recipe and a longer explanation. Fastnachts, a Pa. Dutch Shrove Tuesday Tradition - Home Cooking

Around here bakeries pride themselves on their Fastnachts but even the local groceries stores will carry them for a week around the date. If you haven't tried one, I'll encourage you now - they're yummy! They look like a filled doughnut but have no filling. If you missed it here's an article from yesterdays paper: Roll out the fastnachts - mcall.com My neighbors say that Emmaus Bakery has the best and I may just order a couple form our Coopersburg store - The Good Earth - which has a sign out front that says they are taking orders from them. The morning call also listed some other places to try - Places to order or buy fastnachts - mcall.com

WOW how neat! My husband is from Sweden and they celebrate with a sort of creampuff thing which I bet is a similar celebration food. Wait till I tell him that they celebrate here too! I know he misses Semlor. Another GREAT thing about this area. Thanks for sharing this.

Easton Baking Company has awesome fastnachts. They take orders in advance. These doughnuts are just amazing!

We purchased our fastnachts from Easton Baking for years but no longer live in the area. Maybe my family will get me some and bring them up to me. They make true fastnachts. My favorite is the powdered one. Be sure to pre-order because if you wait til the day of to run down and pick some up, you might leave empty-handed. They sell out quickly.
