My husband and I are planning on moving to the Lehigh Valley sometime this year (we are both retired) so that we can be near our mothers who are in their 80's and can use our help. We are presently living in So. Calif., where our property taxes are much lower than what we are seeing when we look at PA homes online, most of which seems to be School Taxes.

PA homes are less expensive than those in CA, but the PA taxes are astronomically high in comparison. Are there some areas of PA where there are lower taxes than other areas?

I think you have to just think of the taxes as part of the total price. We looked at houses in California several years ago when my husband had an opportunity to transfer there and realized quickly that the house prices were in a different ballpark, but if we wanted to live there, that's what we had to pay.

You are not going to find low taxes unless an area is extremely rural or has a crime problem or maybe both. We have good schools and well paid teachers here in PA because our school taxes are high. What might work is if you figure exactly how close or how far you are willing to live from your mothers and then ask questions and investigate all the towns within that radius.

We never looked specifically for low taxes when we moved up here, we just looked at the total cost.

All of the schools right now are having difficulties with funding but have to figure out a new budget for the upcoming school year by the end of June, so the prices you are seeing now are most likely lower then what they will be in just a few months.

Toobusy-this brings up an important point. My wife and I are considering Lower Northampton/Upper Bucks for our next move (I guess not too many folks living in those towns post on city-data ) and we're trying to evaluate the tax picture. Property taxes on the whole are a BIG drop from New Jersey, but I understand that each town levies an income tax on residents-is that correct? Also, does Pennsylvania levy a property tax on things like cars and boats? I know that some states do that.

Deere, I'll try to help you based on my own tax picture here. I live in far north Northampton County.

We have the real estate taxes, comprised of school tax (biggest chunk), the county tax, and the local tax. Rates for these are set by the respective governing bodies (i.e., in my case the school board, Northampton county council, and borough council).

Then there are the income taxes: PA personal income tax
Personal Income Tax , and the local earned income tax Earned Income Tax : newPA.com (http://www.newpa.com/get-local-gov-support/tax-information/earned-income-tax/index.aspx - broken link) (varies according to municipality - most are 1% but our school district levies 1.35% - which was increased when they abolished the "occupational privilege tax" - used to be an additional amount based upon what type of job you had). Pennsylvania Occupational Privilege Tax (PA OPT) - Ceridian

As far as the cars and boats, here is some info for you:
