Hello
I plan on visiting Georgetown soon in hopes of getting a feel for the town and to look at homes for sale. I wish to purchase a home within walkable distance of the downtown. Are there any areas that I should avoid due to crime and because it's run down? Also, are there any shops that I should visit? Thanks.

Georgetown is great. I really don't think there's any areas to avoid. It's small, but it has some really great neighborhoods and a nice downtown. Quail Run Drive is really nice and you can walk to downtown. The southend of Georgetown has a lot of new houses. Georgetown/Scott County Kentucky Home Page

Well, for the crime to be about 190 points over the U.S. average there has to be SOME somewhat shady spots. Can anyone inform me of these?

Unfortunately, I'm quite a worry wart and need to know what the streets are like. I'm from a smaller town with 100 points above the U.S. average and can tell the slummy-er streets from the safe ones. For Georgetown being about 190 points over, this tells me that there IS crime happening somewhere in the town. I don't plan on possibly relocating to a town with higher crime without knowing some more about the good and bad. Sorry to ask again, but can someone (preferably from Georgetown) tell me about the town and what areas to avoid. Thanks.

The downtown area and the streets around the college are safe. Just outside of the downtown area (especially to the north) the areas can get more sketchy until you get to the newer neighborhoods/Cardome area. For example, there is a mobile home park just north of downtown along 25, with a "rent-by-the-week" apartment complex on the other side, and that area gets some shady action.

There is higher crime in Georgetown than surrounding small towns - there was an article about it in the Herald Leader. They said it was mostly related to drug issues within those certain pockets of areas. Certainly you can feel secure walking through downtown, shopping at local stores like Wal-mart, or driving around the neighborhoods.

In downtown, there are several antique stores, a used book store, a coffee shop, a mom-and-pop cafe, etc.

Thumbs up Georgetown, Ky

Here is a video that will give you some idea what Georgetown is like. I know the area fairly well and I wouldn't have a problem living around there.
